Season 4 of Re:Zero follows Natsuki Subaru as he navigates the challenges within the Great Pleiades Library. Right after overcoming the obstacles on the third floor, the exam for the second floor unexpectedly starts with the arrival of Reid Astrea, a historical figure known as the first Sword Saint. Subaru and his companions must now defeat this legendary swordsman to pass the exam.
While the latest episode of Re:Zero Season 4 might not be as action-packed as earlier ones, the ongoing mysteries surrounding the Books of the Dead and the character Reid Astrea are creating a suspenseful atmosphere that will likely keep viewers hooked.
Subaru Natsuki Explores the Great Pleiades Library Aimlessly
The Books of the Dead And Its Contents
In Re:Zero Season 4, episode 5, Subaru and his friends are officially granted access to the Great Pleiades Library’s archive. This enormous library contains books named after those who have died in the fantasy world. However, the text within these books is incredibly difficult to read because the letters are constantly shifting, a phenomenon Beatrice explains as a kind of mental block.
It’s strange, but Subaru and Julius discover they can experience the lives and memories of people who have died simply by opening random books. One book in particular contains memories Subaru recognizes – those of Typhon, the Witch of Pride. Even with this discovery, they’re still no closer to finding the specific book they need.
I watched as Subaru and Meili had a quiet conversation. I learned she grew up as an orphan, raised by witchbeasts deep in the forest. The talk took an unexpected turn when Meili started asking about the archive – specifically, how the Books of the Dead kept appearing, and whether a new book would be created the moment Subaru died. It was a disturbing question, and I could see it bothered Subaru too. He seemed increasingly uneasy as he began to really understand what the Pleiades Archive meant.

Shaula Obeys Four Secret Rules as the Keeper of Pleiades
Subaru Natsuki Must Follow These Rules or Face Certain Death
Shaula is a mysterious figure in Re:Zero Season 4, responsible for guarding the Pleiades Library. Her behavior towards Subaru and his companions has been questionable, leaving viewers unsure if she’s friend or enemy and what she’s really planning.
As things become more unclear, Anastasia realizes Shaula operates by a secret set of rules within the library. Shaula confirms this, warning everyone she’ll become a dangerous killer if Subaru or anyone else breaks those rules. Even though Shaula promised Subaru she wouldn’t hurt anyone, her agreement with Flugel is more important and will be obeyed first.
That said, the rules in the Great Pleiades Library are as follows:
- It’s forbidden to leave the Great Pleiades Library unless Subaru and the others pass the exams and reach the first floor.
- If anyone from Subaru’s team violates the rules, Shaula will kill them instantly.
- Disrespecting the archive is strictly forbidden.
- Any action intended to damage the Great Pleiades Library is forbidden.
Okay, so now that we all understand the library’s rules, Subaru and the group are being super careful – they’re really watching their steps and how they interact with Shaula. Honestly, it’s a relief! But Subaru knows they can’t get bogged down here. It’s time to focus on the next trial and keep moving forward. Every second counts, and stalling just opens the door to more danger and who-knows-what else!

Julius Juukulius Seeks to Challenge Reid Astrea in the Second Floor Trial
As for the second trial, Subaru once again finds himself in a white room. This time, instead of the stone pillar from before, a single sword stands waiting, and Subaru instinctively pulls it out, starting the second test. Immediately, the room transforms into a wide, green field, and a strange man appears.
The intimidating man before them is Reid Astrea, a legendary swordsman who strikes fear into Shaula. While different from his brother Reinhard, Reid has a fiery temper and a powerful aura. To advance in the trials, Julius bravely steps forward to fight him, while Subaru and the others wait anxiously. It’s unclear whether Julius is strong enough to defeat Reid, and the outcome remains a mystery in Season 4 of Re:Zero.
