As a seasoned researcher who has been following the developments in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space for years now, I must admit that this latest controversy surrounding Ripple’s smart contract plans is quite intriguing.
David Schwartz, the Chief Technology Officer at Ripple, recently tackled a heated debate regarding Ripple’s smart contract initiatives.
According to U.Today’s report, the firm has unveiled plans to integrate smart contract capabilities by the year 2025.
Nevertheless, the declaration faced backlash from Wietse Wind, an active developer within the XRPL community since 2016.
4 years ago, XRP Labs’ CEO first presented a layer-1 smart contract solution called Hooks within his software development company. Now, he emphasizes that this endeavor has led to the release of the Xahau sidechain, enabling users to explore and test out the capabilities of Hooks.
The developer expressed that the company felt a blend of feelings, including disappointment, upon learning about Ripple’s new programming initiatives, as these developments occurred regrettably at a delayed timeframe.
Wind took aim at Schwartz, arguing that Ripple suddenly changed its tune on smart contracts despite the fact that the CTO rejected the idea of bringing smart contracts to the XRP Ledger just three months ago. Such “whimsical pivots” do not bode well for a thriving ecosystem, according to Wind. “Ripple faces a clear choice: embrace and support the existing, proven Hooks technology on the mainnet, or pursue a separate path that risks alienating dedicated developers and fracturing the ecosystem,” he added.
“There was no call”
Responding to Wind’s harsh critique, Schwartz admitted that the RippleX team had spoken with West prior to releasing the contentious post. He also commended Hooks for its forward-thinking methods. “You are correct that my perspective on programmability has shifted recently, and indeed, you were ahead of the curve in recognizing its importance,” he concluded.
However, Wind said that there was only a brief message instead of a call.
Simultaneously, the developer expresses ongoing enthusiasm for what’s yet to be launched on the main network.
