As a seasoned researcher with a keen interest in technology and its implications, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence, I find myself deeply concerned about the latest AI controversy involving the production of low-quality, potentially dangerous books. The story of David Schwartz sharing the viral Reddit post about a family poisoned by AI-generated mushroom identification book is chilling, to say the least.
David Schwartz, the CTO at Ripple, recently highlighted a recent AI debate on his social media platforms.
Schwartz posted a widely-shared Reddit thread, asserting that a family experienced poisoning after trusting an AI-created mushroom identification guide, leading to their illness.
The Reddit poster said that the entire family ended up in a hospital after consuming poisonous mushrooms.
According to reports, it seems the book was bought from a well-known store. However, upon closer inspection, it was found that the pictures inside were possibly created by artificial intelligence, depicting mushrooms. Furthermore, given the repetitive and formulaic nature of some passages, it’s plausible that the text in this book might have been written with assistance from an AI, even including phrases reminiscent of a chatbot’s responses.
Despite the retailer’s agreement to return the book’s cost, there remains apprehension regarding other subpar books that continue to be sold on their website.
The Redditor pondered if it would be possible to report such carelessness about the book’s content to the authorities, with the aim of holding the authors accountable.
“If this report is true, it’s history repeating itself,” Schwartz said in his social media post.
In the case mentioned by the Ripple executive, which dates back to 1991 and is known as Winter v. G.P Putnam’s Sons, two individuals purchased a book titled “The Encyclopedia of Mushrooms” for a reference purpose.
The guide included extensive information on where to find mushrooms, how to collect them and how to cook them. The British book was distributed by G. P. Putnam’s Sons, an American book publisher based in New York. After using the book, the couple became critically ill (to the point where they needed liver transplants).
In a legal dispute, the pair took action against P. Putnam’s Sons, alleging product liability, negligence, and misrepresentation because of inaccurate information in their mushroom identification guidebook. Regrettably, this incorrect data almost led to the hunters’ demise. However, the court ultimately ruled in favor of the publisher in this case.
An excessive amount of subpar AI-created literature might complicate matters for readers seeking reliable data, as they may encounter more falsehoods.
