Ripple CTO Slams Elon Musk For Plans Of Imposing Charges On New X Users

Recently, Elon Musk suggested a new fee for new users on platform X to combat spam and fake accounts. This idea has sparked intense discussions among tech industry leaders like Ripple Labs CTO David Schwartz and ZachXBT. Elon Musk is also part of this debate.

Ripple CTO Slams Elon Musk For Latest Move

Elon Musk explained in a post on X why it’s essential to make new users pay a small fee for writing access. He pointed out two major issues: an excessive number of bots and limited availability of unique usernames.

Additionally, Musk emphasized the difficulties of dealing with false accounts and highlighted the importance of strong protections for user enjoyment. On the other hand, David Schwartz from Ripple Labs strongly disagreed with Musk’s viewpoint. In fact, Schwartz criticized Musk’s statement publicly.

Schwartz criticized Musk for prioritizing convenience over upholding free speech’s core values on the platform. He exclaimed, “Is it really necessary to alter the very foundation of the site just to suppress some lawful yet irritating speech?”

Furthermore, the CTO of Ripple highlighted the importance of separating the suppression of automated bots from the preservation of genuine discussion. He also criticized the preference for ease over the right to free speech. The criticism from Ripple CTO Schwartz ignited a conversation on the significance of upholding freedom of expression and safeguarding various perspectives.

Schwartz agreed with the user that suppressing robots’ output is different from restricting political speech. He stressed that censorship is a matter of personal perspective. Additionally, the Ripple CTO believed that although bothersome speech might decrease the platform’s standard, it should not warrant censorship.

ZachXBT Joins The Debate

Regarding possible solutions to the current issue, Schwartz suggested an uncomplicated yet deep solution: taking a moment to reflect before speaking. Schwartz of Ripple put it this way, “The dilemma of individuals blurtting out thoughtless remarks without a moment’s pause can be addressed by people pausing for a few seconds prior to speaking.”

Additionally, ZachXBT, an investigator in the Web3 world, expressed doubts about the effectiveness of these actions. He pointed out the abundance of confirmed fraudulent accounts and raised concerns if Elon Musk’s suggested plan would bring about the intended outcome.

ZachXBT made clear his disagreement with the belief that the shown snapshot of a fraudulent Wormhole account, boasting a verified badge, would yield the desired outcome. He commented, “I’m not convinced this will have the impact you expect. After all, there are countless verified business scam accounts emerging weekly, for which scammers pay substantial sums.”
