Rocksteady and Insomniac: From Superhero Triumphs to Rough Patches, Can They Bounce Back?

Superhero video games remain a prominent category in gaming, with cultural heavyweights such as Marvel and DC dominating the landscape. Given their influence, it’s no surprise that an increasing number of games are being produced under these brand names. A rich library of superhero games exists, but when it comes to the crème de la crème of this genre, studios like Rocksteady and Insomniac have earned acclaim for their skillful portrayals of iconic characters.

Rocksteady Studios garnered acclaim with their Arkham series, portraying a captivatingly dark take on Batman, whereas Insomniac Games demonstrated exceptional superhero abilities in Marvel’s Spider-Man. Now, Insomniac is preparing for the release of Marvel’s Wolverine, broadening their roster of heroes. Despite both studios achieving success in this genre, Rocksteady has encountered some challenges recently. The disappointing reception to last year’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League marked a significant departure from the studio’s peak period. Insomniac has faced some bumps too, but Rocksteady might find it beneficial to learn from Insomniac’s strategies for recovering from such setbacks.

Despite Developing Different Superhero Brands, Rocksteady and Insomniac’s Roads Have Mirrored One Another

Rocksteady and Insomniac Aren’t So Different

  • Both studios have been praised for strong single-player superhero adaptations.
  • Both developers have experienced failed live-service attempts.
  • The success of their next projects is not guaranteed.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but marvel at the extraordinary work done by Rocksteady and Insomniac in crafting some of the most compelling narrative-driven superhero games in the industry. The Arkham universe and Marvel’s Spider-Man have both left an indelible mark on me, as these game franchises seem to grasp the depth and complexity of their respective heroes more effectively than many films have managed.

Regarding the setback with their live-service games, it appears that Rocksteady Studios suffered more significant consequences over time due to the underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. In contrast, the creators of Marvel’s Spider-Man abandoned a live-service Spider-verse project before it was released. Although Rocksteady experienced a more substantial financial loss, they and the Marvel developer share the common experience of failed live-service projects.

Previous rumors suggest that Insomniac Games might be developing a Venom side story, however, the company itself hasn’t released any formal confirmation about it.

Rocksteady and Insomniac Have to Be Careful With Their Next Projects

  • Marvel’s Wolverine is Insomniac’s next planned game.
  • Rocksteady has yet to announce its next game.

As someone who’s thrilled over the incredible success of Marvel’s Spider-Man, I can’t help but feel a bit apprehensive about a Wolverine-focused game. Don’t get me wrong, I love Wolverine as much as the next gamer, but the challenge lies in the fact that he doesn’t have Peter Parker or Miles Morales’ web-slinging abilities. Navigating through New York City was one of the most exciting aspects of Spider-Man, and without those powers, traversal might feel less engaging.

However, we’ll just have to wait and see what Insomniac comes up with. It’s a big leap to follow up Marvel’s Spider-Man’s fun-filled experience, but they’re certainly taking a risk I can respect. As for Rocksteady, their next move could be tricky as well. They used to have a rock-solid reputation, but if they want to regain it, they might want to learn from Insomniac and stick with a beloved, easily adaptable superhero.

It’s been confirmed by James Gunn that discussions have taken place between him and Rocksteady about the DC Universe. This could potentially suggest further development of games based on DC characters.

For Insomniac, Spider-Man makes an exciting and entertaining character to develop, while Rocksteady has demonstrated their expertise in crafting the Batman universe. Although going back to Batman might seem like a predictable choice, it’s what Rocksteady requires at this moment. Given that they may not be able to handle another situation similar to _Suicide Squad_, following Insomniac’s approach and choosing a more secure superhero before venturing into new territories again could be the wisest course of action.

Currently, both studios are grappling with some level of unpredictability, yet Insomniac seems to be thriving more compared to Rocksteady at the moment. However, this state might not persist indefinitely. Given the circumstances, it could be beneficial for Rocksteady to revisit the Batman franchise again.
