As a long-time fan of the Doom franchise who’s been through countless hours of demon-slaying mayhem, I must say that my heart skipped a beat when I heard about Doom: The Dark Ages. The idea of delving into the origin story of the Doom Slayer, set in the medieval era, is nothing short of exhilarating.
At QuakeCon 2024, some attendees expressed enthusiastic reviews of the exclusive showing of “Doom: The Dark Ages”. This game was initially unveiled during the Xbox Games Showcase in June. “The Dark Ages” is a dark fantasy prequel set in medieval times, chronicling events preceding the Doom Slayer’s exploits in “Doom” and “Doom Eternal”. It delves into the Doom Slayer’s origin as he battles the demonic hordes of Hell.
Anticipation is high for the 2025 release of “Doom: The Dark Ages,” as gamers eagerly await the game based on the weapons featured in the gameplay trailer. These weapons range from a serrated shield, a railgun that shoots skulls, and a chain flail, to a mecha suit enabling players to battle giant demons. id Software unveiled this game during QuakeCon 2024, offering a sneak peek that some attendees have shared for others to check out.
Details about the gameplay of Doom: The Dark Ages were divulged by rabiddentist and an anonymous Steam user, with POW_Studios posting this information on the r/doom subreddit. In their discussion, they talked about some of the game’s new weapons, unveiling two guns: a double-barreled plasma shotgun and a single-barreled shotgun. Additionally, three melee weapons were showcased: a chain flail, Doom Slayer’s fists, and a mace. The flail is useful for gathering extra ammunition, while the fists can generate electric chains. Furthermore, the nail gun has the ability to pin enemies onto walls.
Other Changes Made in Doom: The Dark Ages
In the updated version of “Doom” for “The Dark Ages“, the Glory Kill system has been reimagined. Instead of specific animations, enemies marked with purple rings can be eliminated by charging with a shield, melee weapons, or ranged attacks. The gameplay is said to be slower compared to its predecessors, emphasizing parrying and guarding using the new shield. This shield can be tossed at enemies to inflict continuous damage and stun them, or obliterate several minor enemies in one hit with a powerful Area of Effect (AoE) attack. It’s also capable of reflecting green projectiles when parried and used for movement.
In the upcoming game, “Doom: The Dark Ages,” not only will the dragon and the mech suit (named Atlan) make appearances, but they could potentially reoccur throughout gameplay as well. As for Atlan, it features its own Heads-Up Display (HUD), allowing it to engage in fisticuffs and cannon battles, while also having a unique User Interface (UI). The developers are aiming for the game to be more open than previous installments, with less verticality compared to “Eternal.” Although these features sound exciting for “The Dark Ages,” a proper trailer or showcase video is currently lacking, so fans should approach this information cautiously until further details emerge.
