Rumor: The Sims 5 Allegedly Canceled

Highlights

  • A former Maxis employee suggested that the PS5 version of The Sims 5 has been canceled.
  • The fate of the overall project remains unclear.

As a devoted fan of The Sims franchise, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon hearing the latest rumors surrounding The Sims 5. Having followed the development of this anticipated sequel for years, it’s disheartening to learn that at least one version of the game—reportedly the PS5 edition—has allegedly been canceled.

An ex-worker from Maxis Studios has hinted that one possible iteration of The Sims 5 has been scrapped. However, the final outcome for the next installment of The Sims 4, its sequel, is still undecided.

In October 2022, Electronic Arts hinted at the upcoming addition to the “The Sims” series, initially referred to as “Project Rene.” While some believed it would be the next installment in the franchise, replacing “The Sims 4,” EA clarified that this was not the case. Instead, they envisioned it as a new and distinct gaming experience, intended for various platforms including PC, consoles, and mobile devices. However, EA has yet to officially confirm that “Project Rene” is indeed “The Sims 5.”

The Sims 5 PS5 Version Allegedly Canceled

As a passionate gamer and an avid follower of The Sims series, I’ve come across some disappointing news regarding The Sims 5 project. A former Maxis employee, whose LinkedIn profile was recently discovered by Twitter user @SimmerBerkay, claimed to have worked as a lead character artist on the game for three years ending in spring 2024. During this time, they stated that they contributed to the PS5 version of The Sims 5. However, they also mentioned that the project was canceled.

Rumor: The Sims 5 Allegedly Canceled

A recent claim made by SimmerBerkay about a canceled game called “Project Rene” and its connection to Epic’s Unreal Engine 5 has not been traced back to an original source, according to SimmerBerkay. However, Game Rant conducted further research and discovered that Thomas Sincich is believed to be the owner of the profile in question. Additionally, Sincich’s LinkedIn profile indicates that he was developing a game using Unreal Engine 5. Since “Project Rene” has been strongly suggested to utilize the same engine, this detail adds some supporting evidence to the theory that these two projects could be linked.

It’s uncertain when the supposed cancellation of the game occurred. Sincich parted ways with Maxis in April 2024, which is the latest known time he could have learned about the project being scrapped. Neither EA nor Maxis have provided recent information regarding the status of the upcoming game since late 2023 when it was still seeking playtesters for “Project Rene.” A notable development took place in January 2024, as Grant Rodiek, a key player in The Sims team at Maxis and EA, announced his departure from the studio. He expressed his intent to explore new opportunities that would push him out of his comfort zone.

The future of “The Sims 5” is still undecided. A possible reason for Sincich’s claim of cancellation could be that Maxis abandoned the PS5 edition of the game, but it may still intend to release it on other platforms. Meanwhile, “The Sims” creator is also developing a new game called “Project Dolores,” based on recent job postings.
