Sailor Mercury is a beloved character in the world of Sailor Moon. She was incredibly popular in Japan during the 1990s, and fans especially enjoyed her unique water-based attacks, which made her stand out even among the other Sailor Scouts. Even today, Sailor Mercury remains a key part of the Sailor Moon story. She wasn’t just the first to join Sailor Moon as a Guardian, but she also consistently supported the team with her clever inventions. Ami Mizuno, the person behind Sailor Mercury, truly made the Sailor Guardians the team they were.

9. Shabon Spray
First Appearance: Sailor Moon Episode 8
The eighth episode of the original anime features the very first use of Sailor Mercury’s signature attack. Originally called ‘Shabon Spray’ in Japanese, it’s often referred to as ‘Mercury Bubbles Blast’ or simply ‘Bubble Spray’ in English. What makes this attack special is that Sailor Mercury can use it to both attack enemies and protect herself, making it a key ability as she grows into one of the show’s most powerful heroes.
I’ve noticed that Sailor Mercury has this really clever move, Shabon Spray. It’s basically a spray that disorients enemies, making it hard for them to see – perfect for a quick escape when things get tough. But she doesn’t just use it defensively! I’ve seen her use it to help her teammates attack, because the confusion and vision problems it causes really puts the enemy at a disadvantage.
I noticed this attack sends out a really strong chill, but it doesn’t actually freeze anything. It seems like Sailor Mercury has a more powerful version of the attack she uses when she needs to freeze something.
8. Shine Aqua Cutter
First Appearance: Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon Arcade Game
Sailor Mercury’s video game attacks, especially in Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Another Story, generally come straight from the anime. But one unique attack stands out: Shine Aqua Cutter. Ami can use this special move in the Sailor Moon arcade game.
Sailor Mercury’s Shine Aqua Cutter creates a circle of eight powerful water blades that attack surrounding enemies. While the Shabon Spray attack is even stronger in the game, Shine Aqua Cutter remains a unique and noteworthy ability.
7. Shabon Spray Freezing
First Appearance: Sailor Moon Episode 53
This attack is very similar to Shabon Spray, but instead of bubbles, it uses extreme cold to freeze opponents. While not as widely used, the freezing effect proved crucial in certain situations.
I noticed that Sailor Mercury’s attack animation is really bubbly, almost like a soap spray! It’s interesting because it also introduces ice as a way for her to fight. It seems like she has to be incredibly upset to unleash this full-power move, and honestly, it really shows she’s one of the strongest water-based characters I’ve seen in anime.

6. Double Shabon Spray Freezing
First Appearance: Sailor Moon Episode 80
This is an upgraded version of Sailor Mercury’s signature attack. While it’s a significant improvement, it’s not as different from the previous version as the change from Shabon Spray to Shabon Spray Freezing was. Essentially, this attack simply doubles the freezing effect.
Ami tries out this new ability during a challenging time, when her feelings and friendships are put to the test. It highlights how she draws strength from her emotions, which are key to Sailor Mercury overcoming obstacles. The attack is incredibly powerful, and as a result, she only uses it once throughout the series.
5. Mercury Aqua Mist
First Appearance: Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 2 and Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Episode 2
Mercury Aqua Mist is similar to Shabon Spray, but it’s designed purely for offense. It was prominently featured as Sailor Mercury’s primary attack in the live-action series and continues to be important in Sailor Moon Crystal. In this version of the anime, she collects water in both hands before unleashing the attack.
Ami demonstrates a variety of attacks throughout the live-action series, but many, like Mercury Aqua Cyclone and Mercury Aqua Blizzard, are only used on a single occasion. These attacks also aren’t very effective. However, her initial attack, Mercury Aqua Mist, proved to be quite successful.
4. Shine Snow Illusion
First Appearance: Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 15
In Sailor Moon Crystal, Sailor Mercury’s snowflake attack instantly freezes and defeats enemies with extreme cold. While this attack only creates illusions to temporarily immobilize opponents in the original manga, the anime version, Sailor Moon Crystal, significantly boosts its power to deliver a truly freezing and destructive blow.
3. Mercury Aqua Rhapsody
First Appearance: Sailor Moon Episode 151
Mercury Aqua Rhapsody is one of Sailor Mercury’s most well-known and strongest moves. She begins by summoning her harp and playing a melody to create the attack.
This attack lets her blast enemies with a strong stream of water. While it looks impressive, it’s often not enough to win on its own. She typically needs help from the other Sailor Guardians to defeat her opponents.
2. Shine Aqua Illusion
First Appearance: Sailor Moon Episode 62
When Sailor Moon R first aired on TV, it introduced exciting new attacks that helped solidify its place as one of the most beloved anime series of the 1990s. The main characters gained access to a wider range of powers, and Sailor Mercury, in particular, received a powerful and impressive new attack of her own.
In the anime, Sailor Mercury uses her powers by first gathering water droplets around herself while closing her eyes. She then focuses this water, opens her eyes, and shoots it towards her opponents. When the water hits, it can wrap around enemies, causing damage or freezing them completely.
In the live-action show, Ami uses her powers to put out fires, which is a way to show how she might use them in a believable, real-life situation.
1. Mercury Aqua Mirage
First Appearance: Special Present Ami’s First Love Sailor Moon SuperS Side Story
This attack is shown multiple times in the manga, but it only appears once in the original anime. It’s featured in the short story Special Present Ami’s First Love Sailor Moon SuperS Side Story, which focuses on Ami.
One reason this attack might not be seen often is simply how incredibly powerful it is. It starts with Sailor Mercury launching a massive sphere of water at her opponent. This sphere rapidly transforms into a high-speed torrent, and upon impact, it encases the enemy before exploding from within with a devastating water blast, leaving no survivors. This attack also appears in the Sailor Moon Crystal series.
