As a seasoned researcher with a background in cybersecurity and digital forensics, witnessing this latest scam attempt on YouTube feels like deja vu. The use of AI-generated voices and convincing descriptions to lure unsuspecting victims into handing over their cryptocurrencies is nothing new, but it never ceases to amaze me how these scams continue to evolve.
On Monday prior, a fake YouTube broadcast involving Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, unexpectedly emerged on the widely-used video service, just before Apple’s major tech presentation.
The stream featured Cook promoting a cryptocurrency giveaway scam with a realistic-sounding voice that was obviously generated with the help of artificial intelligence.
Within just minutes, it managed to attract more than a million viewers ahead of the event, during which Apple is finally on track to reveal the iPhone 16.
The bogus announcement claimed that crypto was going to make the world more fair, and the fraudulent giveaway was meant to speed up this process.
Scammers are persuading potential victims to transfer any amount of Dogecoin (DOGE) to a specified “donation address” by scanning a QR code. They claim that the sent amount will be doubled. However, it’s not just Dogecoin holders who are being targeted; Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Tether (USDT) users are also under attack from these fraudsters.
The fake stream made it to the top of search results after including all related keywords in its description, including “Apple,” a recent hit song by British pop singer Charli XCX.
