Sea Of Thieves: How To Disguise As A Chest And Barrel (Disguises Guide)

As a seasoned Sea of Thieves pirate with more years (and shipwrecks) under my belt than I care to remember, let me tell you this: Season 14 has brought us a treasure trove of stealthy tactics that make slipping past unsuspecting foes as easy as walking the plank for a fresh start. The ability to hide in barrels and chests, while not exactly new, has been given an upgrade with the introduction of more ways to disguise yourself, making it easier than ever to sneak around like a cat burgling a ship full of loot.

In the 14th season of “Sea of Thieves”, players are presented with various methods for stealthy play, such as crouching, using blowdarts that have lethal impact, or moving silently while concealed within barrels or chests. Previously, the game introduced stealthy emotes like Chest Hide; however, mastering the art of hiding in a barrel or chest disguise provides a unique and more covert advantage over other pirates during gameplay.

Instead of using stationary emotes like Barrel Disguise and Chest Hide that make your pirate appear as a barrel or chest, opt for disguises that offer full concealment. With these disguises, you can blend seamlessly into the Sea of Thieves world, moving undetected among both other players and PVE enemies.

In addition, Season 14 of “Sea of Thieves” presents various types of hidden loot boxes and disguised barrels to uncover through Commendations, offering additional methods for concealment.

How To Disguise As Chests Or Barrels In Sea of Thieves

In the game Sea of Thieves, you can’t simply grab any random chest or barrel and hide in it to disguise yourself. To put on a barrel or chest disguise, you first need to select it from your Vanity Chest, which you can find on your ship or at the clothing store outside any outpost. In the Vanity Chest menu, navigate to the right to find the Disguises tab. Here, you can add both the Sailor’s Chest and Barrel Disguises to your Disguise Radial Wheel, which are available to all players without unlock requirements. However, additional disguises require completing specific Sea of Thieves Commendations. Click on each Disguise to assign it to a slot on your Disguise Radial wheel, similar to how you would add emotes like the Sea of Thieves Barrel Disguise emote.

However, you can only activate a disguise when crouching. To crouch in Sea of Thieves, tap the right stick if playing on PlayStation or Xbox, or press Q on the keyboard if playing on a PC. When crouched, hold down on the D-pad or the left shoulder button to open the Disguise Radial Wheel, as pictured above. Click on your chosen Disguise to activate it, showing a short animation of your character hopping inside a barrel or chest, depending on which one you selected. Once disguised, you can freely walk around slowly while hidden inside a barrel or chest. When moving, your pirate’s feet are visible, but they vanish from view when standing still (as shown in the video below). This video also shows how to equip disguises via the Disguises Radial compared to the usual Equipment Radial menu for the Barrel Disguise and Chest Hide emotes.

In disguise mode, other players won’t recognize your player tag; instead, they’ll see a prompt like ‘Open Barrel’ when interacting with the barrel or chest you’re disguised as. Remember to avoid revealing yourself unintentionally by not jumping or cancelling actions. Disguises don’t function underwater, where crouching is impossible. But on land and ships, you can use disguises to sneak around undetected.

Apart from the Barrel and Sailor’s Trunk, a total of eight disguises can be unlocked in Sea of Thieves at present, as shown below:

  • King’s Chest Disguise
  • Sea Master’s Chest Disguise
  • Stronghold Chest Disguise
  • Chest of the Damned Disguise

In the thrilling world of Sea of Thieves, you can choose from a variety of disguises to blend into different environments. Whether you’re planning a sneak attack at a Skeleton Camp, merging with stacks of loot, or secretly maneuvering another player’s vessel, these camouflages offer additional methods to create chaos through stealth.

In the game Sea of Thieves, you have the ability to wear disguises while sailing on the high seas or safer ones. But keep in mind that certain Pirate of Mischief Commendations can only be earned by playing the game in the high seas environment.
