The SEC, that stalwart guardian of the financial frontier, has admitted that its past crusades against crypto firms were as misguided as a prospector chasing fool’s gold. It seems the sheriff of Wall Street mistook its own shadow for a bandit, and in the process, forgot the very folks it was sworn to protect.

“Along with seven crypto firm registration-related and six ‘definition of a dealer’ cases, these actions were about as effective as a scarecrow in a hurricane,” the SEC admitted, though perhaps not in those exact words. “No investor harm was prevented, no benefit was bestowed, and the only thing that grew was the pile of paperwork.”

The agency’s previous approach, it turns out, was as balanced as a one-legged man on a tightrope-a “bias for volume of cases brought versus matters of investor protection,” coupled with a misallocation of resources and a misinterpretation of federal securities laws. In short, they were throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something would stick.

But lo, a new sheriff rode into town in April 2025, by the name of Paul Atkins. With him came a shift away from the enforcement-heavy days of Gary Gensler, whose reign had left the crypto industry feeling like a piñata at a party. The SEC, under Atkins, has traded its sledgehammer for a stethoscope, focusing on the maladies that truly afflict the market: fraud, manipulation, and abuses of trust.

In the shadow of Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration, the enforcement division had one last hurrah, pushing through cases with the urgency of a man running from a dust storm. “Aggressive pursuit of novel legal theories” was the name of the game, though it often felt more like a game of pin the tail on the donkey.

“We’ve stopped counting scalps and started tending to wounds,” Atkins declared, though he likely didn’t use such folksy language. “Our focus is now on preventing harm, not just racking up penalties like notches on a belt.”

Figures from Cornerstone Research show that enforcement actions against public companies, including those crypto-related, dropped by 30% in fiscal 2025. Yet, even with fewer cases, the SEC still managed to wring $17.9 billion in monetary relief from the system, including $7.2 billion in civil penalties. It seems they’ve learned that quality trumps quantity, even if the treasury still got its cut.

SEC enforcement continues

The SEC, like a reformed gunslinger, is still drawing its weapon when necessary. In May, it took aim at Unicoin and its executives, accusing them of raising $100 million by spinning tales of future riches. The company, naturally, claims the SEC has it all wrong, but the regulator isn’t one to back down from a showdown.

And in April, the agency went after Ramil Ventura Palafox, alleging he ran a $200 million Ponzi scheme through Praetorian Group International. It’s a reminder that even in the Wild West of crypto, there are still outlaws to be brought to justice.
