As a long-time Sonic fan who’s been through the highs and lows of the Blue Blur’s adventures since the Mega Drive days, I must say I’m both excited and apprehensive about Sega’s latest move with Sonic Generations. The idea of a remastered version is tantalizing, but the thought of losing access to the original game is a bit of a punch in the nostalgia gut.
Sega recently unveiled a package containing the classic Sonic Generations game, in response to its removal from digital stores later this year. The updated version of Sonic Generations is being developed under the name Sonic X Shadow Generations and is set to release in October. Originally launched on PS3, Xbox 360, and Steam in 2011, the upcoming release of a new Sonic Generations has prompted Sega to withdraw the original game from circulation to boost sales for Sonic X Shadow Generations.
Concerns arose among fans regarding this decision, as they were anxious about the future of the 2011 game and how the remastered version would measure up to its original counterpart. These apprehensions escalated when Sega took down the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Generations from their store prior to the July 29 marketplace shutdown, a move reminiscent of Sega’s past practice of removing classic Sonic games from Steam after the release of Sonic Origins in 2022. However, Sega has sought to allay these concerns by clarifying that although the game is being removed from sale, it can still be bought and downloaded via a bundle, with one such option being a legacy game package available on Steam.
On the Steam store page for Sonic Generations, a fresh update has been shared detailing a new collection and its components, accompanied by a concise Q&A section. The first query in this Q&A tackles the question of how Sega will still make the original Sonic Generations accessible following the remaster’s launch, since only the individual game is being removed from sale on September 9, 2024. The Q&A clarifies that the original Sonic Generations will be incorporated in the “Sonic the Hedgehog Legacy Bundle,” which encompasses a total of eight Sonic games from different periods. This bundle is priced at $59.99 USD, offering a savings of $10 compared to purchasing all the games individually.
What’s included in the Sonic the Hedgehog Legacy Bundle?
- Sonic Generations Collection
- Sonic Adventure DX
- Sonic Adventure 2
- Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
- Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1
- Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2
- Sonic 3D Blast
- Sonic Spinball
- $59.99 USD
As a long-time fan of Sonic the Hedgehog, I’m thrilled about this new bundle deal available on Steam that includes “Sonic Generations” and its Casino Night Zone DLC, as well as other classic games like “Sonic Adventure 2.” Growing up in the 90s, these games were a huge part of my childhood, and being able to revisit them now brings back fond memories.
Fans continue to debate the removal of the original “Sonic Generations” game from individual sales, but they’re grateful that Sega includes it in a bundle option. However, some fans find the bundle price a bit steep. Interestingly, they’ve noticed that Sonic Generations and its associated bundles frequently go on sale. Meanwhile, there’s great excitement for “Sonic X Shadow Generations,” an enhanced remaster that focuses on Shadow the Hedgehog in his own campaign, which is still eagerly awaited by fans.
