Apple revealed that Tim Cook will be stepping down as CEO after 15 years. He’ll be taking on a new role as executive chairman on Apple’s board of directors. John Ternus will replace Cook as CEO, but the transition will happen gradually.
Tim Cook began his career at Apple in 1998, shortly before the launch of the iPod. Steve Jobs, then Apple’s CEO, recruited him to lead worldwide operations. Years later, on August 24, 2011, Cook became CEO when Jobs stepped down due to health issues. As CEO, Cook focused on expanding Apple’s product range and promoting diversity, leading to the development of popular products like the Apple Watch and Apple Pay.
John Ternus to Succeed Tim Cook as Apple CEO
Tim Cook, who has faced some recent criticism for his interactions with the Trump administration, will be stepping down as Apple’s CEO. His resignation is effective September 1, 2026. John Ternus, currently Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, will take over as CEO. Apple’s board of directors unanimously approved this change. Cook will remain with Apple as executive chairman starting September 1, and will work with Ternus over the summer to ensure a seamless handover of leadership.
Despite recent news, Tim Cook will still be leading Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). He’ll give the opening keynote speech from Apple Park in California on Monday, June 8th at 1:00 PM Eastern Time, which will be available to watch on Apple’s website and app. While a new iPhone won’t be unveiled, Apple is expected to share details about the latest versions of its software, including iOS, macOS, and tvOS. WWDC runs from June 8th to 12th, allowing developers to learn about and begin integrating new features into their apps before the official software updates are released. With the next version of iOS compatible with current iPhones, including the upcoming iPhone 17, it’s exciting to see what else Apple has in store.
Who is John Ternus?
So, Tim Cook’s stepping down, and John Ternus is taking over as CEO! It’s pretty cool to learn about his background – he started out designing VR headsets at Virtual Research Systems, which is awesome. He joined Apple way back in 2001, working on their displays, and eventually became a senior VP of hardware engineering in 2021. Then, a year after that, he took the lead on the Apple Watch. Cook actually wrote a letter saying John really gets what Apple is all about and has the character to lead with honesty. He seems super confident that John will take the company to amazing new places, and that we’ll really feel his influence in all the cool stuff Apple creates in the future. I’m excited to see what he does!

With Ternus taking over as CEO right before Apple usually announces new products, he’ll likely face immediate challenges. One of the most anticipated projects is the rumored iPhone Fold, and it remains to be seen how Ternus will guide Apple’s direction going forward.
