Waltio, the French crypto tax platform that’s basically the IRS’s cooler cousin, is currently being held hostage by ShinyHunters, a hacker collective so notorious, they’ve probably sent more ransom notes than a bad dating app.
- Waltio is being extorted by ransomware group ShinyHunters. Because nothing says “we’re secure” like being held for ransom.
- The company confirmed services remain secure, and no crypto or banking access was compromised. (Spoiler: They probably still have your tax info.)
- ShinyHunters is notorious for targeting major companies and crypto exchanges. Because who needs privacy when you can have a nice ransom?
ShinyHunters, known for high-profile crypto and corporate hacks, is threatening to leak users’ 2024 tax reports unless a ransom is paid. Because nothing says “we’re serious” like holding your taxes hostage.
Waltio says its services and production systems remain secure, and no sensitive banking or crypto access data was compromised. (Translation: We’re not sure, but we’re definitely not admitting anything.)
The company has filed a complaint with France’s cybercrime unit, which is basically the digital equivalent of calling the cops on a prankster who stole your Wi-Fi.
According to Protos, ShinyHunters has previously extorted AT&T for six bitcoins, threatened to leak Ticketmaster data, and targeted major Indian crypto exchanges. Because why just hack one company when you can hack a whole continent?
