Silent Hill is On a Generational Run That Doesnโ€™t Seem to Be Slowing Down

For fans of Silent Hill, the last few years have felt like a return to the series’ golden age. We’ve not only seen a remake of a classic Silent Hill game, but several entirely new games are also on the way, including last year’s Silent Hill f and the anticipated Silent Hill: Townfall. With both remakes and fresh installments, Silent Hill is experiencing a resurgence and shows no signs of slowing down.

For a long time, it seemed like the Silent Hill series would be lost to time. While it was a hugely influential horror game franchise in the 90s and early 2000s, it faded from view after Konami unexpectedly canceled the game hinted at by the popular P.T. demo. Now, after a decade, Silent Hill is making a comeback, potentially ushering in a new and exciting chapter for the series with a lot of momentum.

Silent Hill: Townfall Will Mark the Third Release in 3 Years

  • Silent Hill 2 Remake โ€” 2024
  • Silent Hill f โ€” 2025
  • Silent Hill: Townfall โ€” 2026

The Silent Hill franchise is experiencing a major revival, with three significant game releases planned over three years. It started with the critically acclaimed Silent Hill 2 Remake in 2024, which reintroduced the series to players. Last yearโ€™s Silent Hill f offered a fresh perspective, featuring a unique story by Ryukishi07 and a new Japanese setting. Looking ahead to 2026, Silent Hill: Townfall promises another distinct experience, taking players to a brand new location and offering a different take on the seriesโ€™ established formula.

While Silent Hill: Townfall doesn’t have a firm release date yet, it’s still expected to launch in 2026, as shown by its recent appearance at the February 2026 State of Play event.

Man, the release history for Silent Hill has been a real rollercoaster. It started strong โ€“ after the first game dropped in ’99, we were getting new titles every year or two up until 2007. That year was packed with Silent Hill: Origins on the PSP, plus a bunch of mobile games and even an arcade cabinet! Then, for three years after that, we got a new main Silent Hill game every single year โ€“ Homecoming in ’08 and Shattered Memories in ’09. After a mobile game in 2010, things went quiet until Downpour came out in 2012. Unfortunately, it didn’t land well with fans, and that pretty much put the whole series on hold.

In 2014, the game P.T. briefly excited fans about a possible return of Silent Hill, but its cancellation and removal from the PlayStation Store seemed to end the series. While Silent Hill: Ascension, an interactive horror series, began a revival in 2023, the first actual new game, Silent Hill: The Short Message, didn’t arrive until 2024. Though it received mixed reactions and was relatively short, The Short Message paved the way for the highly praised Silent Hill 2 Remake, which truly marked the beginning of a new era for the franchise.

Praise for Recent Silent Hill Games Proves This Generational Run is Legit

Although the Silent Hill series had more games released between 2007 and 2010, those titles didn’t receive particularly good reviews. In contrast, Silent Hill 2 Remake and Silent Hill f have both been very well-received, with scores of 87 and 86 on OpenCritic, respectively. Silent Hill 2 Remake also received five nominations at The Game Awards 2024, and Silent Hill f earned three nominations at the 2025 awards. While itโ€™s still too early to know how fans and critics will react to Silent Hill: Townfall, the recent positive response to the series suggests a promising future.

The Silent Hill 1 Remake Can Continue This Trend

After 2026, the future of the Silent Hill series is uncertain, except for the confirmed Silent Hill 1 Remake currently being developed by Bloober Team. While a 2027 release for the remake could continue a yearly release pattern, Bloober Team recently launched Cronos: The New Dawn, so itโ€™s unclear how far along the remake is in production. This situation suggests a possible strategy for future releases: Bloober Team could handle remakes, while other studios โ€“ like NeoBards (developing Silent Hill f) and Screen Burn Interactive (developing Silent Hill: Townfall) โ€“ create entirely new Silent Hill games.

Silent Hill’s Future as a Series Has Never Been Brighter

The Silent Hill franchise, which seemed finished just a few years ago, is now thriving and reaching levels of success it hasn’t seen in over two decades. The performance of Silent Hill: Townfall will be key, but it could give Konami the recipe for a successful future for the series โ€“ even if that means taking the story beyond the town of Silent Hill. It’s remarkable to say, but 2026 looks like a fantastic time to be a Silent Hill fan, something almost no one would have predicted five years ago.
