Silent Hill: Short Message Can’t Be Last Time Series Uses First-Person

Silent Hill: Short Message Can't Be Last Time Series Uses First-Person

As a die-hard fan of the Silent Hill series since the early 2000s, I have witnessed the highs and lows of this iconic franchise. From the chilling atmosphere of the original game to the mind-bending narrative of Silent Hill 2, I’ve been hooked ever since. So when I heard about Silent Hill: The Short Message, I was intrigued, to say the least.

At the PlayStation State of Play in January 2024, the announcement of “Silent Hill: Brief Communication” was one of the most unexpected surprises. Many didn’t anticipate a collaboration between PlayStation and developer Konami to unveil a brand-new, exclusive PlayStation title, especially one that would be released the same day as the announcement. From the moment “Silent Hill: Brief Communication” was introduced, it stood out from any other entry in the series’ storied past. The overall response to the experience was divided, but few could contest that the first-person perspective significantly enhanced the IP. As more titles in the “Silent Hill” franchise are set to be released, it seems the focus will remain on traditional third-person experiences. Nevertheless, “Silent Hill: Brief Communication” shouldn’t mark the last time the series ventures into first-person horror.

Silent Hill: The Short Note

Silent Hill: The Short Message Saw Konami Experiment with a New Perspective

In a daring shift for the Silent Hill series, Silent Hill: The Short Message showcased mostly unique elements that were exclusive to this installment. Essentially, it seemed like an endeavor to update the franchise, pushing it into the realm of modernity. The story, characters, items, and terrors in the game emerged from a very contemporary context, characterized by social media, perpetual connectivity, and the emergence of novel forms of cyberbullying, sorrow, and solitude. More specifically, The Short Message represented Konami’s attempt to explore a fresh subgenre within survival horror. Instead of sticking with their traditional third-person gameplay, puzzles, and exploration, they opted for a more personal first-person perspective that delved into mental health issues and interpersonal relationships.

Although many found the dialogue heavy-handed, repetitive, and filled with teenage angst, the short game titled “Silent Hill: The Short Message” stood out by presenting the world of “Silent Hill” from a first-person viewpoint. When it was effective, it was truly impressive, providing an engaging glimpse of what a mainline installment could achieve with a contemporary twist. The environments were detailed and occasionally unsettling, and while its chase sequences were lengthy, they provided authentic scares at first. Despite the series not planning to revisit this perspective in its officially announced projects, “The Short Message” demonstrates that the first-person view could have a role in the franchise’s future.

Silent Hill Should Return to First-Person In a Future Title

The beloved horror series, Silent Hill, is making a significant comeback, with several multimedia endeavors underway. Konami has announced plans for a remake of Silent Hill 2, another unnamed game titled Silent Hill f, Silent Hill: Townfall, a new film, and an additional, as-yet-unnamed Silent Hill project. It’s possible that even more projects are in the pipeline. With numerous Silent Hill experiences under development, Konami has ample opportunity to explore innovative visuals, gameplay mechanics, and narrative themes. The lessons learned from the strengths and shortcomings of Silent Hill: The Short Message could be applied to shape the development of these upcoming, as-yet-unannounced projects. Particularly, the first-person perspective of the title might be adapted to a more immersive experience that aligns more closely with the core essence of the main series.

In a wobbly attempt to rekindle the chilling psychological terror that made the Silent Hill series legendary, came “The Short Message”. Despite some rocky moments, it managed to mark the beginning of a fresh wave of installments. The concepts introduced in “The Short Message” have the potential to dramatically shape the future course of the mainline games, with a significant shift towards first-person perspective being one such change. As we eagerly await further information about the main series, particularly Silent Hill f, supporters of “The Short Message” are optimistic that its most promising ideas will resurface in the future.
