Silly Things About Wolverine’s Family in Marvel Comics

I’ve been a Wolverine fan for years, and he’s truly a legend – one of Marvel’s original and most iconic characters. He’s famously the best at what he does, even if that ‘what’ involves a lot of fighting and isn’t always pretty! Because he’s been around for so long and lived such a complicated life, it’s no surprise his family history is incredibly complex – full of drama, heartbreak, and a lot of secrets. There’s always something new to discover about his messed-up family, whether you’re a longtime fan or just getting into his story.

Want to learn more about Wolverine’s history in Marvel Comics? We’ll share some surprising and little-known facts about his life, including details about his family – both by blood and those he considers family.

Dog Logan is Wolverine’s Secret Half-Brother, and His First Rival

Before There Was Sabretooth, There Was Dog Logan

Wolverine constantly faces challenges, and his half-brother, Dog Logan, is a major source of trouble. They share the same father, Thomas Logan, who worked as a groundskeeper at the Howlett Estate. Though they don’t focus on their family connection, they were once close friends for centuries, but that friendship eventually turned into a bitter rivalry.

When young James Howlett (later known as Wolverine) lost control in a moment of anger, he accidentally killed Thomas Logan. This left Dog Logan deeply scarred, both emotionally and physically. Years later, driven by a need to prove himself superior, Dog Logan dedicated his life to tracking down and confronting his half-brother, highlighting the incredibly troubled history of the Logan family.

Sabretooth is Not Wolverine’s Brother, But He Treats Him Like One (In a Way)

Sabretooth’s Hatred of Wolverine Goes Deeper Than Blood

Despite what the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) showed, Sabretooth and Wolverine aren’t actually brothers. The film portrayed them as biological siblings, but the comic books tell a different story. According to the comics, their history is much more complex, stemming from an incident over a century ago where Wolverine supposedly killed Sabretooth’s brother.

Every year, Sabretooth relentlessly pursues Wolverine, driven by a deep-seated desire to torment him. His twisted birthday ritual involves harming those Wolverine cares about – either by killing his loved ones or brutally injuring anyone who gets close – and always ends in a vicious fight that leaves Wolverine battered and broken for weeks. Though they aren’t related by blood, Sabretooth and Wolverine share a connection that’s far more profound than any family tie.

Folkbern Logan is an 11th Century Ancestor Who Witnessed Apocalypse & Thor

Wolverine Isn’t the First Logan to Fight With Thor

Folkbern Logan is an ancestor of Wolverine who lived in 11th-century London, England, and worked as a guard. While he only appears briefly in a few pages of the comic Uncanny Avengers (issue #6, April 2013), it’s clear he is a member of Wolverine’s family tree.

In the year 1013, Folkbern was a man who didn’t believe in any gods. Everything changed when the Horsemen of the Apocalypse appeared. Desperate for help, Folkbern prayed for a protector, and the powerful Thor, God of Thunder, answered his call. Witnesses saw Thor’s incredible strength, and one of them remarked, “Folkbern Logan… you are the best at whatever you set your mind to. However, your actions aren’t very admirable.” This is a clear nod to Wolverine’s famous line, “I’m the best there is at what I do…”

Wolverine’s Family Tree Consists of Clones and Unknowns

Clones, Natural Born Sons, and Even Unknown Mongrels Make Up Wolverine’s Legacy as a Father

Wolverine has lived for hundreds of years and experienced love many times. Though tragedy often befalls him, he’s still managed to have children who share his mutant abilities. Beyond traditional birth, Logan also has several clones worth noting, making him a father in a unique way.

  • Laura Kinney (Clone/Daughter)
  • Gabby Kinney (Clone of a clone/Daughter)
  • Akihirio / Daken (Son)
  • Gunhawk (Son)
  • Saw Fist (Son)
  • Cannon Foot (Son)
  • Shadowstalker (Daughter)
  • Fire Knives (Daughter)

The characters Gunhawk, Saw Fist, Cannon Foot, Shadowstalker, and Fire Knives are actually the Mongrels – Logan’s secret, illegitimate children. Over the centuries, these children were manipulated by the Red Right Hand into believing Logan was their enemy, and their sole purpose was to make his life miserable. Sadly, Wolverine even ended up fighting and killing them, proving just how complicated his family history is.

Romulus is Wolverine’s (Potentially) Oldest Ancestor

Romulus Has Puppeterred Wolverine’s Entire Life With His Own Immortal Cunning

It seems like anyone connected to Wolverine through his bloodline ends up being his enemy. Romulus is one of these individuals, and his backstory makes Wolverine’s history even more complicated. Romulus has made numerous claims, but many of them have been proven false.

Romulus and Wolverine share striking physical traits and similar mutant abilities, suggesting a connection between them. Romulus claims to be a Lupine – a human tribe descended from wolves – and strongly emphasizes this connection, perhaps to emulate Wolverine. He’s secretly manipulated events in Wolverine’s life, similar to Sabretooth, but with roots stretching back further than ancient Rome. It’s unclear if Romulus is actually Wolverine’s ancestor, but he presents a convincing argument, despite being a habitual liar and a villain.
