Solana Rolls Out First Mainnet Update To Tackle Congestion Issues

To alleviate its traffic woes, Solana has rolled out a new software update for its validator client, as revealed by Anza, a Solana Labs offshoot. This latest version, 1.17.31, is aimed at combating the delays and heightened transaction failures brought about by excessive spam transactions on the Solana blockchain.

In this update, we’re introducing a new priority system called stake-weighted quality of service (SWQOS). Designed for staked validators, it streamlines the processing of their transactions.

“QoS (Quality of Service) is a networking technique that prioritizes some data packets or connections over others for enhanced network reliability, as explained by Tim Garcia, Solana Foundation’s validator relations lead. In the present setup, approximately 80% of the network capacity is allocated to QoS, while the remaining 20% is open for general use.”

Solana Congestion Issues Should Ease

Anza highlighted the significance of the recent update through a post on X today, explaining: “Validators for MainnetBeta, I suggest you switch to version 1.17.31 for regular use now. This revision brings improvements intended to ease some network pressure, with more advancements in v1.18 soon. Upgrade only when your delinquent stake is below 5%. Remember to keep an eye on your node after updating and share any concerns with the mb-validators group on Discord.”

Solana Status corroborated this announcement with a similar statement: “The v1.17.31 release is now recommended for general use by MainnetBeta validators. This release contains enhancements which will help alleviate the ongoing congestion on the Solana Network.”

Validators on the MainnetBeta network now suggest using the v1.17.31 release due to its new features aimed at easing the current traffic jam on the Solana Network.

Trent.sol (@trentdotsol), speaking on behalf of Anza, explained the importance of extensively implementing these enhancements in SWQOS: “Keep in mind, these are refinements for SWQOS. The effect will increase with the number of users adopting them. Don’t anticipate a significant shift in dependability of unstaked TPUs. Maintain delinquency below 5% during the upgrade process. We have more developments coming up, so stay tuned.”

Rex St. John of Anza added that the initial set of Solana mainnet congestion updates have been released, long-awaited by many. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that these are not the complete v1.18 upgrades, which will include more enhancements later on.

On GitHub, the update’s thorough explanation brings up some technical advancements. Notably, there have been modifications concerning how staked and unstaked packets are dealt with. Additionally, there are enhancements to the BankingStage Forwarding Filter, a vital component for preserving network operations’ productivity.

At a crucial juncture for Solana, this update is essential. The platform has been under close examination due to concerns about handling large transaction volumes without a conventional mempool, resulting in complex network management tasks. However, the development community remains confident that these advancements, coupled with upcoming enhancements, will significantly improve the situation and boost network resilience and efficiency.

At press time, SOL traded at $150.
