Sonic the Hedgehog 4: 5 Big Updates to the New Movie

After a year without news, SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog is returning to the big screen! Paramount has just released a short preview of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which continues the story from 2024’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3. This time, Ben Schwartz returns as Sonic, and he’ll be battling Metal Sonic, a popular villain hinted at in the last movie’s ending credits.

Sonic won’t be alone on his adventures! Kristen Bell, known from shows like The Good Place and the movie Frozen, will voice Amy Rose, the cheerful pink hedgehog. Sonic will encounter both familiar faces and new enemies as he explores a larger universe in the latest installment, Sonic the Hedgehog 4. He’ll face old rivals and brand new dangers along the way.

5. The Wachowski Family is Back Together

Sonic and his friends are gearing up for a new adventure, and they’ll be joined by some familiar faces. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter are returning as Tom and Maddie Wachowski. Since the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2020, Tom and Maddie have become the adoptive parents of Sonic, Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessy), and Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba), forming a heartwarming family that’s become a key part of the series.

Tom and Maddie have become less central to the story since helping Sonic adjust to life on Earth. Their relationship faced challenges in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 when Tom was hurt during the team’s mission in London. Although the group came together again at the end of the most recent movie, lingering issues and the potential danger of Metal Sonic could drive them apart in the future.

4. Jim Carrey is Back, But May Not Be The Doctor Fans Expect

Even though Dr. Robotnik seemingly died a heroic death saving Earth in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Jim Carrey will reprise his role in future films. While Robotnik has survived impossible situations before, the explosion of the Eclipse Cannon appeared final. However, clues from past Sonic games and confirmed characters for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 suggest a possible way for him to return.

As a fan, I’ve been thinking a lot about how Jim Carrey could come back for another Sonic movie, and there are some exciting possibilities! I’ve heard theories that he might play a Robotnik from a different dimension – one who never had that moment of almost-redemption at the end of the last film. Or, maybe the next movie will draw from Sonic Heroes, and Carrey could play a Robotnik imposter created by Metal Sonic to trick Sonic and his friends. Whatever they do, I have a feeling Carrey will be amazing and totally steal the show again!

3. Keanu Reaves Will Return as Shadow the Hedgehog

In addition to Jim Carrey’s comeback, the trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 confirmed the return of Shadow the Hedgehog. Originally introduced as a villain in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Shadow – voiced by Keanu Reeves – ultimately put aside his anger to keep a promise to an old friend by protecting the planet. Even though he seemingly perished in the destruction of the Eclipse Cannon, a scene after the credits showed that the anti-hero actually survived and will be back.

Unlike the Shadow in the video game, it’s currently unknown what state he’ll be in when he reappears. After first appearing in Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow’s story involved him losing his memory and questioning his own identity – even wondering if he was the real Shadow or an imitation. Although the post-credits scene in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 suggests he remembers enough to retrieve his Limiter Rings, he might need assistance from his former enemies to fully recover his memories and understand who he is.

2. The Chaos Emeralds Will Play a Major Role

The trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 heavily features the seven Chaos Emeralds. Each emerald seems to reflect a key returning character, like Amy Rose, and Jim Carrey’s voiceover suggests exciting new chaos is coming. This focus on the emeralds likely means they will play a central role in the movie’s story.

The Chaos Emeralds not only help Sonic and Shadow transform into their powerful super forms, but they can also give people the power to control space and time. The movie’s trailer includes music from Sonic CD, suggesting it will explore time travel like that game did. It seems Sonic and his friends will be in a race to find the Emeralds and stop a terrible future from happening.

1. Four New Actors Have Joined The Cast

In addition to the recent video announcement, several new actors are joining the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Ben Kingsley (from Wonder Man), Matt Berry (What We Do In The Shadows), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), and Richard Ayoade will all appear in currently secret roles, along with previously announced newcomer Bell.

Although the actors’ roles are currently unknown, they all have significant experience with voice-acting, hinting they might be playing characters that aren’t human – perhaps robots or animal characters. In January 2025, Fowler also mentioned that Metal Sonic could have a lot more dialogue in the movie, which means one of the new actors could be voicing the villain. With the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 less than a year away, fans are excited to learn more about Sonic’s latest cinematic adventure.
