Sony Officially Comments on the PS6

Sony has offered a glimpse into its plans for the next PlayStation, currently known as the PlayStation 6. The company has a long history of success in the gaming console market, starting with the original PlayStation, which surpassed Nintendo to become the industry leader. This success continued with the PlayStation 2, which remains the best-selling console of all time.

The PlayStation 2 was the clear winner of its generation, and although the PlayStation 3 got off to a rocky start, it ultimately proved to be quite successful. The PS4 continued this trend, and the PS5 is rapidly approaching 100 million units sold globally. Given PlayStation’s consistent strong sales, it’s almost certain we’ll see a PlayStation 6. While Sony hasn’t revealed the PS6 yet, the company’s president and CEO recently shared some thoughts about it.

Sony CEO Answers Question About the PS6

During Sony’s recent earnings call, CEO Hiroki Totoki addressed concerns about how current memory shortages and rising hardware costs might affect the PlayStation 6. He explained that Sony hasn’t yet determined the PS6’s release date or price, stating they’re closely monitoring the situation. Totoki also mentioned they’re exploring different sales strategies for the PS6, depending on how the market evolves, though he didn’t provide specifics. It remains to be seen what those strategies will be.

The cost of video game consoles is increasing dramatically due to a shortage of computer memory (RAM) and the current global economic situation. The PlayStation 5 is now more expensive than when it first launched. The standard PS5 with a disc drive costs $649.99, which is $150 more than its original price in 2020. The PS5 Pro is even pricier at $899.99. If the next console, the PS6, is more powerful – as is typical – it’s likely to cost over $1,000, given today’s market prices.

Launching a very costly console likely wouldn’t benefit Sony, which explains the lack of an announced release date or price for the PS6. Current estimates suggest it will arrive in 2027, coinciding with the expected release of Xbox’s next console. There’s also talk of Sony releasing a handheld version of the PS6, or even a hybrid console similar to the Nintendo Switch. For now, fans can only guess about the PS6’s features and capabilities until Sony officially reveals more details.

I’m actually hoping Sony holds off on a new PlayStation for a while. Even though the PS5 has been out for almost six years, it feels too soon for a new generation. The pandemic really disrupted the PS5’s launch and progress, so this generation feels like it’s just getting going. It will be interesting to see what the PS6 costs and whether people are willing to pay that price, whatever it may be.
