The sequel to “Splitgate” is now accessible on computers and gaming consoles, introducing an unanticipated battle royale mode. Preliminary signs show that “Splitgate 2” has garnered a substantial following, but player responses to the game’s initial release version seem divided.

The game titled “Splitgate: Arena Warfare” is a free-to-play arena shooter, which gained popularity last summer when it was released on consoles, having been available for PC only for two years prior as early access. However, the creators at 1047 Games in Nevada recently declared that they will cease any further development on this game and focus instead on a more advanced sequel.

On Friday, June 6th, the latest title made its official debut on PC and consoles. The launch was marked by a trailer that was first shown during Summer Game Fest 2025. Although the open beta for Splitgate 2 had already given us a good look at most of the free-to-play shooter, 1047 Games held back one key feature until the very end – the battle royale mode, which they simply called Splitgate: Battle Royale.

Splitgate 2’s Battle Royale Mode Offers 60-Player Matches

The newly created game mode is structured for a thrilling, high-speed adventure involving 60 participants divided into 15 teams of four. Each battle royale encounter takes place in Split Worlds, an expansive, interconnected arena comprised of five distinct biomes connected by significant World Portals. Initially, four of these biomes serve as landing spots, such as the Glacier with its frozen terrain, the fiery Inferno, and the arid Drought desert. The asteroid cluster Fracture is another option. Players who manage to survive will eventually unlock access to the fifth biome, a location brimming with extraordinarily potent equipment.

In addition to the new game mode, Splitgate 2 includes several extra maps such as Simulation Hectic, Sanctum, Grit, and Academy. The map creator’s toolkit also comes with a new water-themed template, along with a powerful shotgun named Gravitas, and other exciting additions.

Splitgate 2 Is Already Getting Decent Traction

Based on information from SteamDB, “Splitgate 2” experienced a significant surge in popularity shortly after its early June debut, attracting approximately 26,000 players simultaneously. The initial version of the game saw an even greater peak on Valve’s platform, with nearly 68,000 players at its zenith. However, enthusiasm for “Splitgate” waned quickly following news from developer 1047 Games that they would be devoting more resources to a sequel, just one year after the original release. In contrast, “Splitgate 2” promises additional content and sustained support moving forward. As of now, the game is receiving mixed reviews on Steam, with over 9,000 user opinions shaping its rating. Numerous negative reviews express dissatisfaction with the game’s adherence to battle royale trends and pricing in its cosmetic store, but the core gameplay has garnered widespread acclaim.
