As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of arena shooter experience under my belt, I must say that the upcoming release of Splitgate 2 has piqued my interest. Having followed the tumultuous journey of its predecessor from early access to Beta, I was both thrilled and disheartened by its ups and downs.
Back in May 2019, I, as a gamer, got my hands on Splitgate during its early access release. The initial response wasn’t exactly overwhelming, but the indomitable spirit of the 1047 Games team kept it alive. Fast forward to July 2021, and the Beta launch was when things really took off for this shooter. In those first Beta months on Steam, I was part of a daily player base that soared over 50,000, a remarkable achievement for an indie game like me.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been riding the waves with Splitgate. The journey wasn’t always smooth; just a few months post its Beta release, the player count plummeted to a mere 5,000, and by 2023, it dipped below the 1,000 mark. But here’s a silver lining – around the same time, we got wind that a sequel was in the pipeline from 1047 Games. And now, the wait is over! Introducing Splitgate 2, the long-anticipated follow-up, set to drop in 2025.
Splitgate 2’s Faction System Explained
From the trailer and press release, it appears that Splitgate 2 is expanding on its original version by introducing notable changes, one of which is a new Faction system. As stated on its Steam page and official website, Splitgate 2 will introduce three unique factions: Aeros, Meridian, and Sabrask. Each faction offers special abilities to players, with Aeros providing agility, Meridian offering time manipulation powers, and Sabrask enabling a run-and-gun playstyle.
Despite the vague official explanations, the announcement trailer for Splitgate 2 offers some insights into its revamped Faction system. From the video, it appears that the Meridian Faction grants players the ability to peer through walls and hurl a device that immobilizes opponents. The Aeros Faction seems to wield a throwable boomerang weapon and can create portals without requiring a specific surface. Lastly, the Sabrask Faction seems to have an ability to deploy cover.
Splitgate 2’s Faction System Could Be a Double-Edged Sword
Splitgate 2’s Faction System Is a Solid Evolution of the Formula
In 2021, the initial release of “Splitgate” introduced its Beta, captivating players by filling a gap seldom addressed by other games. With the last “Halo” installment having been released quite some time ago, enthusiasts yearned for a fresh take on arena shooter experiences. However, upon the launch of “Halo Infinite,” the popularity of “Splitgate” waned. Instead of simply upgrading the graphics using Unreal Engine 5, developers at 1047 are aiming to refine the gameplay formula with “Splitgate 2.” The new Faction system could potentially introduce more complexity to the series’ arena shooter dynamics.
Splitgate 2 Already Has a Lot of Competition
Although the Faction system in Splitgate 2 has sparked some debate, its unique abilities have led people to draw comparisons with hero shooters like Overwatch. However, the developers of Splitgate 2 insist that it’s not a hero shooter. Nevertheless, when Splitgate 2 launches next year, it may face competition from heavyweights such as Overwatch 2, FragPunk, Concord, The Finals, and Marvel Rivals, making its entry into the market quite challenging.
