SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Game review

As a longtime SpongeBob SquarePants enthusiast who has grown up with the yellow sponge and his underwater pals, I must say that The Patrick Star Game has left me absolutely tickled! It’s as if my favorite dim-witted starfish got the chance to shine in his very own sandbox game.

I was astonished when I learned that SpongeBob SquarePants turned 25 years old not too long ago. It’s no wonder, given its broad appeal to both kids and adults, thanks to its quirky humor and lovable characters. SpongeBob has become an undeniable cultural icon. Earlier today, a YouTube video I was watching incorporated the famous “Two Hours Later” SpongeBob meme to depict someone struggling with a game. In honor of SpongeBob SquarePants’ 25th anniversary, a new video game has been released, but surprisingly, The Patrick Star Game puts the spotlight on Patrick instead of SpongeBob.

Best friend and fan favourite Patrick Star is an idiot, but that’s what makes him the perfect protagonist for a daft sandbox game. There’s not much of an overall goal in The Patrick Star Game, you’re just let loose in Bikini Bottom and told to help your friends and generally mess around a bit. Completing a broad range of objectives (from helping friends to going down a slide or taking a nap) will net you Sand Dollars, which unlock a whole host of outfits based on the show and will eventually allow you to enter the fry cook games.

In the spirit of SpongeBob’s sidekick, The Patrick Star Game offers a straightforward yet delightful gaming experience. Much like Patrick himself, the game allows you to run, jump, and even take a quick nap – which surprisingly becomes your primary means of navigation through familiar game locations. Napping may not seem like an effective way to explore the world, but when Patrick dozes off, you can swiftly transport him by rolling his sleeping body at great speed! Just as silly as it sounds, this quirky mechanic guarantees that moving around remains amusing throughout your adventure.

In addition to rolling and leaping, I’ll find myself spending a considerable amount of time interacting with various objects scattered throughout the game. Climbing ladders to scale buildings, dodging jellyfish for a thrilling ride, and using brushes to stir up trouble among NPCs are just a few examples. The physics-based gameplay adds an extra layer of fun, as I can recklessly hurl items about, creating mayhem in the most delightful way. Exploring the world and discovering hidden references that fans will appreciate is another big part of the enjoyment this game offers.

The uniqueness of The Patrick Star Game lies in its wide array of engaging activities. Many of these activities are straightforward, such as participating in Mrs. Puff’s races or SpongeBob’s block-blasting challenges from a floating platform. However, some activities closely resemble popular games that you might not anticipate.

The first time Sandy Cheeks asked me to start power washing a slimy fire station I was pretty blown away, and that’s but one of these activities. At the airfield you can compete in skydiving challenges that are essentially just Pilotwings, complete with different aerial equipment, rings to fall through, and a target to land on. My favourite task of all of them though was cooking at The Krusty Krab and Chum Bucket, which is all the chaos of Overcooked with an extra physics twist.

In an open-world game like The Patrick Star Game, you won’t find a lack of collectibles. Instead of the usual trinkets, these are represented by Patrick’s beloved sauce – mayonnaise. You’ll discover jars of it hidden in every corner and crevice. Gathering all the mayo containers within an area awards extra Sand Dollars to your collection. It might not be groundbreaking, but it provides ample activities to keep you engaged for longer periods in Bikini Bottom.

The Patrick Star Game offers a delightful open-ended playground that younger gamers are sure to enjoy, but it does come with some drawbacks. Repetitive voice lines become tiresome rather quickly and seem to occur frequently. Furthermore, not all activities are equally engaging, and I found the boat racing rather dull due to the unresponsive controls. Additionally, I encountered numerous glitches during gameplay, primarily getting stuck in the ground. However, a day one patch might address these issues.

The Patrick Star Game offers a delightful SpongeBob-themed playground full of diverse activities to keep you entertained. Fans of the iconic Nickelodeon character, Patrick Star, will discover numerous reasons to adore this first-ever adventure. While there might be a few less engaging minigames and repeated voice clips, overall, you’ll find joy rolling around on the ocean floor.
