Building friendships is a crucial part of life in Stardew Valley. As a fresh face in the quaint little town of Pelican, you have the chance to become a beloved member by showing kindness and generosity towards your fellow villagers. Whether it’s friendship or something more you seek, forging connections with these characters is key to enhancing your experience in this charming world.
In Stardew Valley, many players understand that conversing with villagers, offering them preferred gifts, and selecting specific dialogue options can enhance friendships. However, it’s crucial to note that not every gift or action carries the same weight — some will foster relationships more effectively than others. Here is a breakdown of how a Stardew Valley player can maximize their relationship with another character:
1. Pay attention to the villager’s preferences: Each villager has unique likes and dislikes for gifts, so it’s essential to learn these preferences and cater to them when gifting.
2. Regularly interact with the villagers: Engaging in conversations, participating in events, and helping villagers with their requests can help build relationships over time.
3. Give quality gifts consistently: Giving a series of good gifts (based on the villager’s preferences) will help increase friendship points more effectively than giving occasional or random gifts.
4. Choose dialogue options carefully: Some dialogue options may have positive or negative effects on your relationship with a villager, so choose your words wisely to avoid damaging friendships.
5. Complete heart events and quests: Completing heart events and villagers’ specific questlines can significantly boost friendship points and bring you closer to reaching the maximum relationship level.
6. Be patient and persistent: Building strong relationships takes time, so be patient and keep interacting with your chosen character consistently to see the friendship grow.
The Heart Scale
To see how friendly your character is with all Non-Player Characters (NPCs), navigate to the menu and click on the tab represented by a heart symbol. Here, you’ll find a list detailing each NPC and the number of hearts or friendship levels that your player has gained with them.
Over time, as players interact and build friendships with Non-Player Characters (NPCs), an array of opportunities will unfold. This might include viewing Heart Event scenes, finding new recipes delivered by mail, or gaining access to unique dialogues. It’s important to note that the heart gauge doesn’t fully illustrate the process of friendship development; it merely indicates progress.
What Is One Heart?
To boost your friendship level by one notch with that NPC, players need to accumulate approximately 250 friendly interaction points with them. Most interactions like chatting with the character, offering gifts, and so on, influence this friendship level in some way. Players can gain points through positive actions, but neglecting the character or performing negative actions may decrease your friendship level instead.
Boosting Friendship Gain
To quickly increase the pace of making friends with your fellow townsfolk, consider acquiring “Friendship 101”. This useful guide can be won as the ninth prize from the Prize Machine located in the Mayor’s Mansion. Starting in Year 3, there’s a small possibility that the Bookseller will have it for sale. If he does, you’ll find it listed among his wares for a cost of 20,000g.
As a movie enthusiast diving into this book, you’ll find yourself with a lasting boost of 10% in your friendship points earned from now on. In simpler terms, every interaction that strengthens friendships will be worth 10% more points. It’s important to note that the book doesn’t affect any friendship losses, and there are no extra benefits if you decide to re-read it.
Point Values For Individual Character Interactions
In Pelican Town, there are numerous methods for increasing or decreasing friendship levels. A significant number of these methods stem from personal encounters between the player and the town’s inhabitants.
Everyday Interactions
- Talking to the character will typically net the player +20 points. If that character is in the middle of an activity (for example, exercising or doing chores), the reward is +10 points instead. Though slightly lower, it’s still worth giving a greeting in any circumstance to prevent friendship decay. In the Social menu tab, a check mark will appear under the dialogue bubble in the rightmost column to show that the player has spoken to a character that day.
- Completing an item delivery from the Bulletin Board outside Pierre’s store will grant the player +150 points with the recipient.
- Failing to talk to a character on any given day will result in a slight decrease in friendship. Generally, this is -2 points per day. However, if the player has given the character in question a bouquet, this increases to -10 per day. And if the player is married, not talking to their spouse results in a -20 decrease on that day. Don’t ignore significant others!
Giving Gifts
Regarding presents, each villager tends to have unique tastes. However, there are some options that are usually excellent selections!
- Loved Gifts: +80 points
- Liked Gifts: +45 points
- Neutral Gifts: +20 points
- Disliked Gifts: -20 Points
- Hated Gifts: -40 Points
Gifts presented during the Winter Star Festival will earn you an impressive 5 times the regular points, whereas birthday presents will multiply your points by 8. However, remember that disliked or unwanted gifts can significantly reduce your points on these special days. So, take a moment to research and choose your gifts wisely for these occasions.
Stardrop Tea
In the world of Stardew Valley, there are several popular gifts that people adore, but none quite compare to the Stardrop Tea. This unique item significantly boosts friendship with an NPC when given; it adds a whopping 250 points or, to put it another way, one full heart. If bestowed on special occasions like birthdays or Feast of the Winter Star, its power is amplified threefold, filling their hearts completely with three full hearts. What’s more, players can even present Stardrop Tea after they’ve reached the regular gift limits (two per week and one per day).
Stardrop Tea is not common, but players can find ways to get a taste of this unique drink. You can win it from the Prize Machine in the Mayor’s office, or sometimes discover it in Golden Fishing Chests. Completing the Helper’s Bundle on the updated Community Center Bulletin Board will earn you one as a reward. Additionally, the raccoon might gift you one as appreciation for accomplishing his more advanced tasks.
The Movie Theater
After the cinema opens, you can treat your companions or loved ones by buying a ticket for them. To extend an invitation, purchase a ticket priced at 1000g and hand it over as a gift. Each character in the game may have different preferences regarding movies and snacks, which could impact the development of your relationships based on their reactions to your choices.
- Loved Movie: +200 points
- Liked Movie: +100 points
- Disliked Movie: 0 points
- Loved Concession: +50 points
- Liked Concession: +25 points
- Disliked Concession: 0 points
Conversations & Dialogue
At times during conversations with characters, they might ask questions directly to the player. For example, Abigail could inquire about your opinion of her artwork, or Haley may ask what you do on the farm. The right answers can increase points for you by +10 to +50, but incorrect responses might lead to a decrease.
Generally speaking, it’s not hard to figure out that certain responses will be more favorable to some characters based on their personality traits. Players can often guess which response the character might prefer by considering the asker’s demeanor. A rude or sarcastic reply tends to decrease friendship levels, whereas kind and considerate choices usually earn points, or at least don’t negatively impact friendship.
In a similar vein, Interactions related to Heart Events might involve dialogue options. These conversations are usually more intimate and can affect friendship levels significantly, ranging from a decrease of 200 points to an increase by the same amount. It’s usually clear which responses will lead to friendship or animosity, just like with other dialogues.
Festivals & Events
The Flower Dance
At a festival, players need to have built a bond of at least four hearts with the NPC before they can invite them to dance. Each dance performed will boost their friendship by one heart or 250 points.
The Luau
At the summer festival’s communal feast, participants have the option to contribute something to the shared soup. The flavor of their contribution may affect the friendship status they share with every villager present.
- Best Soup: +120 points
- Good Soup: +60 points
- Neutral Soup, no item added, or Lewis’ Purple Shorts added: 0 points
- Bad Soup: -50 points
- Worst Soup: -100 points
The Community Center
In the neglected community center of Pelican Town, there’s a collection often called the “Bulletin Board.” It includes several groups: Chef’s Group, Enchanter’s Group, Fodder Group, Field Research Group, and Dye Group. Once these tasks are accomplished, the player will earn 500 friendship points (the equivalent of 2 hearts) with every villager who can’t be romanced.
