Starfield: Shattered Space - Should You Take The Other Interlock In Exhuming The Past

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating through various galaxies, I must say that Starfield: Shattered Space has truly captured my imagination. The Exhuming The Past DLC offers an intriguing glimpse into the history of House Va’ruun, and the decision at the end of the quest adds a layer of depth that many games lack.

In the game Starfield: Shattered Space, players aid diverse factions within House Va’ruun, allowing them to decide which faction they assist initially. The mission “Exhuming The Past” might be among the initial or final missions in the DLC due to this flexible order, but it provides valuable information about the origins that underpin the DLC’s storyline.

As I delve deeper into this gaming adventure, I find that many tasks are easy enough to conquer. However, the final decision in the House Va’ruun quest carries a significant impact based on my empathy towards their people. Here’s how to finish the quest, along with an overview of the outcomes for each choice I make at the end.

How To Complete Exhuming The Past In Shattered Space

Your journey starts at Ma’Leen Dam, located southeast of Dazra. Upon arriving at the Dam and interacting with the ID Card Reader, you’ll find that a key card is necessary to enter the dam. Close by, Comrak Abbas, a local boy, will be present, ready to guide you towards the individual who can provide the key card – but only if you manage to persuade him first.

Inside the dam, safety is ensured as there are no adversaries. A handy guide will assist in smoothly navigating the sequential path. Upon reaching the Sub Pump Control computer, you’ll encounter a familiar puzzle associated with the dam. To energize the Sub Pump Control, return to the platform from where you entered and locate a power module on the western wall that needs to be destroyed by firing at it. This destruction will activate the controls, allowing for further advancement.

As you move forward, you’ll carry on conversing with a Vortex Spirit named Karija Ma’leen who may ask you to retreat twice before launching an attack on the third occasion. Given that Karija has a tendency to teleport frequently throughout the room and possesses high health, it would be wise to employ ranged weapons instead of melee attacks, as melee players might find themselves spending too much time trying to catch the Phantom.

Karija is not killed here or in the next few fights so no need to look for a body to loot.

Exhuming The Past Computer Code

In the following chamber lies the teleportation test, equipped with a code beside the computer that must be adjusted to the appropriate power level for success. Referring to past trials’ records, it appears the correct setting is 335 as a power of 235 was 100 units too low. Proceed with the teleportation procedure to advance into the next room where both Karija and Vedrasa await, ready to confront you.

Getting The Interlock

To power the Interlock and remove it you’ll need to find another power module and destroy it. In the next room with the crates, look up and to the right to see the red emergency cuttable wall. The four pins in the corner can be cut using a melee weapon or mining drill, and doing so will make the door open and lead to the room with the power module which will be along the far back wall. Three Vortex Phantoms will also spawn in the room with you and will need to be taken care of.

After dismantling the power source, make your way back to the Interlock so it can be taken out. However, Karija informs you that disabling the second Interlock will inundate the village you initially encountered at the beginning of the task.

Should You Take The Other Interlock Or Leave

Opting for the alternate route via the Interlock won’t impact the rewards for completing this quest. However, the method of exiting the dam will vary significantly based on your choice. Selecting the Interlock opens an easy pathway outside, whereas skipping it means you’ll have to retrace your steps through the entire dam while battling Vortex Phantoms all along the way. Regardless of your decision, returning the Interlock(s) to Ekris in Dazra will always result in a reward for the player.

  • 12,000 Credits
  • Exterminator Modified Va’Ruun Penumbra
  • 4 20MM Particle Rockets
  • 350 XP

Picking the alternate Interlock will necessitate players unlocking the security door on its left side, allowing them to damage the power module and proceed to the second one. Going for the second Interlock introduces an optional mission objective where you’ll witness the devastation caused by your actions in a nearby village. However, this decision-making process won’t affect gameplay mechanics beyond shaping your character’s emotions – it can be bypassed if desired. Ultimately, your choice revolves around how you want your character to behave, as there are no long-term consequences.
