Starfield’s Shattered Space Feels Like an Afterthought And is Something Avowed Needs to Avoid

Announced as far back as 2020 during the Xbox Games Showcase, this role-playing game (RPG) has now been released. Although it may have a few problems, it has garnered generally favorable reviews from both enthusiasts and experts in the field.

At this moment, there’s uncertainty about what direction Avowed will take next since Obsidian Entertainment has yet to announce any plans for a DLC or expansion. However, if they do decide to move forward with additional content, it’s crucial that they avoid repeating the mistakes made by Bethesda in the Shattered Space DLC.

Avowed must learn from Starfield‘s Shattered Space nightmare

On September 30th, 2024, Bethesda introduced its first DLC for Starfield titled Shattered Space, a little over a year after the game’s initial release. Todd Howard and his team hinted that this expansion would rejuvenate the game by exploring the enigmas of House Va’ruun, and offering fresh weapons, armor, and more.

Regardless of Bethesda’s efforts to build excitement for the expansion, gamers didn’t seem to take kindly to it. In fact, as soon as Shattered Space DLC was released, it was met with a wave of negative feedback. Currently, it holds a Mostly Negative rating based on over 3,000 reviews, which is one of the lowest possible scores on Steam.

It seems the Shattered Space DLC didn’t meet expectations for several reasons. To start with, Bethesda pledged to rectify the main problems in the base game, but failed to deliver on that promise. Additionally, the new content presented was short, tedious, and didn’t justify the one-year wait and $30 price tag.

If Avowed eventually gets a Downloadable Content (DLC) in future, Obsidian Entertainment should avoid repeating the mistakes made with Starfield’s DLC. The developer needs to create DLC that offers substantial and captivating content since the game has already received criticism for its visuals and deviated from the Pillars of Eternity experience. Given its current situation, Avowed can’t afford a lackluster DLC.

Introducing additional content through the DLC is crucial to prevent potential negative impact on the game’s future popularity. It should broaden the gaming environment, tackle players’ feedback, offer fresh quest lines, and modify the overall experience in a way that justifies the cost.

Avowed must bring this one crucial feature

Previously mentioned, the possibility of Obsidian creating a DLC or expansion pack for the game Avowed remains undecided. If they opt to proceed with its development, it would be beneficial for them to incorporate the feature that allows players to alter their characters’ appearances post-character creation.

In the game “Avowed“, a limitation is that players can only select characters from elves or humans at the start. After this initial choice, there’s a wide variety of tattoos, hairstyles, and other customization options available. Players might find it challenging to decide on their character’s appearance, and they may wish to change it as they progress deeper into their adventure.

Beyond that point, it’s been observed by several members in our community that the lighting within the character creator is rather dim, and there can be variations in a character’s appearance between the character creation stage and the actual gameplay.

Here’s hoping that the forthcoming improvements and fixes will prompt Obsidian to incorporate these modifications into the character creation process within the game.
