Summary
- AC Shadows enhances stealth gameplay, offering realistic encounters and increased challenge.
- AC Shadows limits parkour mechanics for a grounded approach, focusing on stealth.
- Enemies are more alert, promoting slow, careful approaches to gameplay in AC Shadows.
The Assassin’s Creed series is renowned for its stealth-based gameplay, but it hasn’t always emphasized stealth, especially during its contemporary period. Starting from Assassin’s Creed Origins, the franchise has shifted towards open, real-time combat, often overshadowing its classic stealth system. However, it’s in the newest installment, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, where the series truly excels, as it has revamped its stealth system to offer a more satisfying, engaging, and rewarding experience than ever before. This revamp includes more authentic encounters and a higher level of challenge.
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the increased focus on stealth has had a mixed impact. While this enhances the overall stealth experience, it appears to have diminished the parkour element, which is usually celebrated in the Assassin’s Creed series. Although parkour features remain and have been enhanced with new animations, they no longer match their former glory. This might be forgivable considering the improved stealth mechanics that the game now showcases.
AC Shadows’ Parkour Has Been Reimagined to Prioritize Stealth
AC Shadows Offers Fewer Opportunities for Extensive Parkour
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, there are just as many buildings and geographical barriers to navigate as in previous games. However, the incorporation of traditional Japanese architecture offers unique challenges for parkour. Despite this, the parkour mechanics in Shadows are more grounded than ever before, largely because the game places a greater focus on stealth. Instead of urging players to climb higher structures, Assassin’s Creed Shadows encourages them to stay near the ground, with the new ‘prone’ ability being a testament to this approach.
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it’s worth noting that foes below might spot players more easily if they’re perched on rooftops. This tactic isn’t a common focus in the series.
In past Assassin’s Creed games, players could climb almost anything that appeared to have handholds, or even things that didn’t necessarily look climbable. However, in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, climbing options are significantly restricted. For instance, rock walls with handholds may not be climbable at all. Additionally, the game doesn’t always make it clear how far your characters Naoe or Yasuke can jump from an edge, making movement more challenging. As a result, Assassin’s Creed Shadows features one of the most constrained parkour systems in the series so far.
Stealth Is the Best It Has Ever Been in AC Shadows
In my opinion, what sets “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” apart is its intense emphasis on stealth gameplay, a focus that has truly elevated the series to new heights. The stealth element in this game feels incredibly refined, urging players to tread lightly and carefully evaluate each circumstance before making a move. Enemies in “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” are remarkably alert and persistently active, making it challenging to execute assassinations on those who have already detected your presence. This heightened awareness adds an extra layer of realism to the gameplay, making every encounter feel tense and exhilarating.
The enhanced focus on stealth in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows presents both advantages and disadvantages, primarily because it seems to have diminished the parkour aspect significantly.
Emphasizing stealth significantly has been a key element that Assassin’s Creed Shadows has effectively incorporated. Even though Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which aimed to rekindle the series’ original essence, didn’t prioritize stealth as extensively as Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it’s the design philosophy of AC Shadows that truly sets it apart. With its revamped AI and innovative stealth features, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has established itself as a standout in terms of stealth-focused games within the Assassin’s Creed series, despite a somewhat diminished parkour system.
