The new Steam Controller quickly sold out on its release date of May 4th, and people are already reselling it on eBay for much higher prices – up to three times the original cost. Demand was so strong that it even caused temporary issues with the Steam store, which was the only place to buy it.
In February 2026, the Steam Deck quickly sold out at Valve’s US store and many other retailers. This happened as rumors spread about potential manufacturing problems caused by a shortage of RAM. Now, people are concerned that the new Steam Controller might be hard to find too, despite not being impacted by the RAM issue.
Steam Controller Listings on eBay Could Go Over $300
The Steam Controller quickly sold out after it became available, and almost instantly, people began reselling it online at much higher prices. Some listings on eBay are asking for around $330, even confirming the purchase, which is over three times Valve’s official price of $99.
It’s kinda wild – nobody who pre-ordered the Steam Controller through Steam has actually gotten theirs yet, since it’s still shipping! So all those listings popping up on eBay? They’re basically people reselling their orders – the confirmation they successfully bought one from Steam – not an actual, in-hand controller. It’s pre-order flipping, basically!
Man, the Steam Deck controller launch was rough! Social media was flooded with people saying they couldn’t even get to the store page to try and buy one. I checked Downdetector and it showed a huge spike in problems right when it went live. Even folks who did manage to snag one said it wasn’t easy – a lot of us had to refresh the payment screen a bunch of times just to get the purchase to go through. It was a frustrating experience, honestly.

The current situation is drawing parallels between Valve and Nintendo. When Nintendo launched the Switch 2, they took steps to prevent scalpers, like requiring proof of purchase for warranties in Japan and limiting pre-orders to verified users. Now, many gamers hope Valve will use similar methods to protect the Steam Controller from being quickly bought up by scalpers and bots, just as Nintendo did with Switch 2 pre-orders.
Many fans who couldn’t buy the device when it first became available are now waiting to hear from Valve about when more will be available. So far, the company hasn’t said anything about the quick sell-out or given a date for new stock. However, based on past releases of its Steam accessories, it’s likely more controllers will be available soon.
Besides the Steam Deck, Valve is planning to release two more gaming products – the Steam Machine and Steam Frame – later this year. Although a shortage of computer memory has caused some delays, the company expects to launch them as planned. Valve hopes these releases will go smoothly, so gamers can buy them directly without having to resort to expensive resale markets like eBay.
