As a seasoned gamer and aficionado of the SteamWorld universe, I must say that each character in this roster brings their unique charm and gameplay mechanics to the table. But among these mechanical marvels, one bot stands out as a veritable juggernaut: Cornelius “Hightower” Column, the Poetic Colossus!
In the strategic, turn-based gameplay of “SteamWorld Heist 2“, a diverse array of playable characters is virtually essential. To establish an engaging and authentic universe, developers Thunderful have crafted a distinctive band of customizable companions, each with their own distinct skills and personalities. These characters are remarkably individual in both narrative and gameplay aspects. However, it’s worth noting that certain crew members in “SteamWorld Heist 2” excel more in combat situations compared to others.
In SteamWorld Heist 2, some characters excel when paired with specific playstyles due to their unique skills. These range from stacking damage bonuses and long-range teleports across the map, to indestructible shields and increased bullet-dodging chances. When it comes to combat, these are the optimal team members to have by your side.
11 Captain Leeway – The Self-Conscious Submarine Driver
The Playable Protagonist Guiding The Adventure
As I embark on the thrilling turn-based adventure of SteamWorld Heist 2, Captain Leeway serves as my representative in this seafaring escapade. Though he doesn’t actively participate in combat, he takes center stage as the commander of our submarine and its central hub. In moments when we dock or explore diverse taverns and hideouts scattered across the Great Shard’s islands, I step into his boots to navigate and interact with this captivating world.
In essence, he doesn’t possess any remarkable specialized abilities, but it’s through his steam-powered eyes that gamers explore the game’s universe, and his personal journey serves as a key element in the storyline.
10 Rosa “Chimney” Rivet – “The Boisterous Brawler”
A Competent Combatant Who Struggles To Set Herself Apart
By nature, Rosa Rivet is an effective fighter within Leeway’s team, but it can be challenging for her to stand out among her flamboyant shipmates because her special skills don’t significantly alter the gameplay experience.
Her ‘Title for Title’ skill, which retaliates with two units of damage when attacked, appears to be a distinctive feature worthy of further investigation. Nevertheless, due to the fact that she rarely engages in battle on purpose and may still meet an unfortunate end even in such situations, her defining passive ability often goes underutilized.
9 Daisy Clutch – “The Orphaned Adventurer”
A Stellar Sharpshooter Who Is Usurped By Other Sniper Crewmates
In SteamWorld Heist 2, Daisy Clutch serves as the vibrant and lively introduction for novice players to the tactical turn-based battles and distinctive flair that are characteristic of Thunderful’s gameplay.
While Daisy is an effective and reliable sniper, her ‘Stun Gun’ ability, which temporarily incapacitates enemies, often gets outshone by the stronger traits of some members in her team. Though she remains a good option for any mission, it seems that among this group, there might be another sniper who would be more beneficial.
8 Sola “Sol” Fathom – “The Mystical Aquanaut”
A Unique Take On Steam World Heist 2’s Narrative, But A Floundering Fighter
As one of just two engineers aboard the Leeway’s crew, I, Sola Fathom, bring a distinct flavor to the team’s history. My presence suggests a connection to the mysteries hidden beneath the vast expanse of the Great Sea, adding an intriguing layer to our journey.
Although her engineering role is valuable, the versatility of crewmates in SteamWorld Heist 2, who can switch classes at will, overshadows her distinctive talents. Consequently, her ‘Eldritch Beam’ ability, which can heal and reduce its own cooldown after an upgrade, appears less enticing due to its limited appeal.
7 Tristan Torque – “The Hype Bot”
An All-Round Team Player With Varied Capabilities
Without a doubt, Tristan Torque stands out as a highly valuable team member in Leeway’s crew, embodying the essence of a team player. This makes him an ideal pick for newcomers to SteamWorld Heist 2.
Due to Torque’s ‘Always Ready’ special trait, he can swiftly apply healing items during his turn at no cost, and if he uses one on a fellow crew member, he is restored by one damage point. This feature makes Tristan an essential team healer, who not only constructs defenses as an engineer but also maintains the team’s health while they defend their position.
6 Dame Judy Wrench – “The Seasoned Master”
A Potent Powerhouse Damaging Across The Battlefield
Amongst all the members of the Leeway crew, Dame Judy Wrench stands out with her comically apt name. Unlike others, she isn’t assigned to the Boomer class by mere coincidence; rather, she possesses an inherent capability. With the right upgrades, she can unleash a variety of explosive and incendiary damage in dynamic ways.
Refining Wrench’s skill ‘Harsh Language’ – which deals three damage points to any enemy within the explored area while also causing splash damage – changes it to ‘Verbal Lashing.’ ‘Verbal Lashing’ not only increases the power of her ability but transforms it into a free action and inflicts the previously mentioned burn effect on damaged enemies. Furthermore, it has the extra feature of spreading this effect among enemies, making Wrench a formidable force of destruction.
5 Beacon Potts – “The Nervous Triggerbot”
A Cautious Killer With A Knack For Guerrilla Warfare
Without a doubt, among Leeway’s standard snipers, Beacon Potts stands out as both versatile and indispensable. Her anxious appearance belies a deadly precision and an uncanny ability to dismantle dieselbots with ease.
Besides his innate sniper skills that enable him to shoot from anywhere on the map, Beacon also has abilities that let him move stealthily across the battlefield and hide to take out opponents from afar. The ‘Scram’ ability, which allows instant teleportation to previously visited locations, can be enhanced to ‘Sneakstrike.’ This upgrade not only improves his evasion and positioning, but also lets him use it as a free action, and he becomes temporarily invisible following its usage.
4 Poe Phroggi – “The Conbot’s Daughter”
A Sneaky Crewmate Who Can Dodge Enemy Fire On A Whim
By nature, Poe Phroggi often operates from the flanks, allowing her to traverse great distances and launch attacks undetected from behind enemy positions. Moreover, when the situation turns hazardous for her, she has the ability to swiftly evade incoming fire.
Poe possesses two distinct talents, both passive in nature, yet equally impactful as her crewmates’ active skills. Firstly, she benefits from the ‘Hasty’ ability, which increases her movement range significantly. However, it is her exceptional skill ‘Slippery’ that truly sets her apart. This ability passively shields her from half of all enemy projectiles, enabling her to not only launch powerful attacks from enemy flanks but also survive encounters that could otherwise be lethal.
3 Wesley Hotchkiss – “The Honorable Gentlebot”
An Early-Game Addition Who Can Squash Squadrons In A Single Turn
Should players opt for the tutorial in SteamWorld Heist 2, they’ll meet up with Wesley Hotchkiss who swoops in to save them. During this rescue mission, Wesley, with his Reaper class, unleashes a barrage of bullets against a horde of dieselbots, demonstrating the special ability that sets his class apart.
As a gamer, I can wipe out multiple foes at once during my turn, given that I manage to eliminate them all. This is thanks to my ‘Grenadier’ skill (which lets me use a grenade item gratis every single turn) and my ‘Veteran Wardog’ talent, which adds an extra point of damage for each enemy I take down in the same turn, stacking up with every foe felled.
2 Cornelius “Hightower” Column – “The Poetic Colossus”
A Stoic Soldier Who Can Soak Up Damage To Protect His Allies
It appears that Cornelius Column aligns with his recent peaceful perspective, as his skills stand out distinctively compared to the more aggressive capabilities typically found amongst his teammates.
Besides being naturally tougher with a larger health pool that lets him endure multiple attacks compared to most characters, Cornelius also possesses an upgradeable defensive skill called ‘Abs of Steel.’ In its basic state, this ability makes Cornelius invincible against enemy assaults and provokes adversaries to attack him, thereby giving his teammates a chance to breathe. When upgraded to ‘Body Butter,’ this potent ability becomes even more beneficial because it can be used for free during your turn and can be combined with other actions you perform.
1 Barbara “Crowbar” Crowe – “The Cocky Gallon Hunter”
A Plague Doctor-Looking Bot With Extravagant Movement Abilities
By nature, character Barbara Crowe often moves around enemy strongholds to inflict damage from unexpected angles, and she has the unique ability to access locations inaccessible to other characters – all while unleashing wide-spread damage on nearby opponents.
Besides the extra distance that Barbara’s Flanker movement typically covers, her special ability known as ‘Hollow Frame’ allows her to jump up to higher platforms, eliminating the need for ladders and lengthy detours. This can also influence the progression of story missions, as she can gain early access to blocked-off areas due to her ability to leap over gaps.
