Nintendo announced that Takashi Tezuka, a veteran game developer known for his work on iconic titles like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, will be retiring. Tezuka began his career at Nintendo creating graphics for the arcade game Punch-Out!! and joined the company full-time after graduating from college. He’s particularly famous for collaborating with Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s most well-known employee, to design and direct some of the company’s most important games, including the original Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda.
As Miyamoto advanced in his career, Tezuka became the lead director on several hugely popular Nintendo games like Super Mario World and A Link to the Past. Many Nintendo fans recognize his name – he’s often credited at the end of games. For the past eight years, Tezuka has also been an executive officer at Nintendo, serving on the board of directors. He continues to work as a producer on newer titles, including Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Pikmin 4, within the company’s entertainment development team.

Okay, so this is kinda hitting hard as a long-time Nintendo fan. Takashi Tezuka, a really important figure at Nintendo – think Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda – is stepping down as executive officer on June 26, 2026. He’s got less than two months left in that role! It’s sad because he’s been with Nintendo for over 40 years. And it’s not just him – Hideki Konno, who directed a ton of Mario Kart games, left last year after also spending over 40 years at Nintendo. It feels like the end of an era seeing these legends move on.

In addition to Satoru Iwata’s departure, three other board members—Takuya Yoshimura, Katsuhiro Umeyama, and Keiko Akashi—are also retiring on the same date. Yutaka Takenaga and Chika Saka are slated to join the board, pending shareholder approval. Furthermore, Genyo Tezuka will be stepping down as a senior officer in Nintendo’s entertainment development and planning division, concluding his 40-year career as a producer with the company.
Developed by Tezuka, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first completely new Super Mario game in eight years. Recently, Nintendo has been prioritizing revivals of older series like Donkey Kong Bananza, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and the upcoming Star Fox 64 remake. However, Tezuka’s franchises, including Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda, have consistently received new games, despite some, like Pikmin 4, taking nearly ten years to develop.
