Pokémon is revisiting its roots by bringing fans back to the Kanto region in a new release of the original manga. While Pokémon has become a global phenomenon over the last thirty years with its video games, anime, and trading cards, many fans haven’t yet explored the manga, which offers a unique way to experience the story.
As the Pokémon franchise prepares for its tenth generation, the Pokémon world continues to grow with new regions, skilled trainers, unique challenges, and lots of new Pokémon to discover and catch. Each new game is accompanied by a new anime series, featuring either the long-running story of Ash or the more recent adventures of Liko and Roy. While the games and anime are very popular in the West, there’s also a manga series that’s been running since 1997, offering a fresh and different perspective on each Pokémon generation.

If you’re new to the Pokémon Adventures manga, don’t expect a simple retelling of the anime. This series closely follows the storylines of the Pokémon games, particularly Red & Blue, mirroring the player’s adventure through the Kanto region. While it features a more complex plot, longtime Pokémon fans will recognize many familiar faces, exciting gym battles, and a surprisingly sinister Team Rocket.
Although officially labeled as “Children’s Fiction” by Simon & Schuster, the Pokemon Adventures manga is significantly darker and more mature than the anime. Expect higher stakes, more intense violence, and villains with truly evil plans. The manga doesn’t shy away from serious consequences, and both humans and Pokemon can suffer brutal fates – including deaths from decapitation and burning. There are even instances of large-scale destruction, like a trainer responsible for the deaths of many people in a city, though this doesn’t happen in the first volume.

The timing of this manga’s re-release shows just how much fans still love the Kanto region. This enthusiasm was already clear when Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen were unexpectedly re-released on the Nintendo Switch in February. Those games quickly became bestsellers, selling over 4 million copies by early May.
