Survive in RuneScape’s Ashenfall: Where Wild Magic and Dragons Reign

In the expansive world of Gielinor, home to the enduring MMORPG “RuneScape”, you’ll find bustling cities, ominous forests, treacherous deserts, and much more. The upcoming spinoff survival game, titled “RuneScape: Dragonwilds“, presents a new continent called Ashenfall, a part of Gielinor that was believed to be irrecoverably lost. Unlike the lands in “RuneScape”, the wild and untamed Ashenfall in “Dragonwilds” requires players to tap into its magical environment, construct shelters, cook meals, craft tools, and combat numerous creatures to ensure their own survival.

In an interview with Game Rant, Jesse America, executive producer of Dragonwilds, highlighted the significance of abilities such as cooking, crafting, and woodworking in this open-world adaptation of RuneScape that focuses on survival. Although Dragonwilds will incorporate combat and other elements reminiscent of MMOs, it primarily functions as a survival game, making the realm of Ashenfall more untamed and ominous than what RuneScape players might expect.

In Ashenfall, Wild Magic Is Everywhere

In times past, the continent named Ashenfall experienced a peculiar occurrence that led to the dissemination of an enigmatic energy known as anima across its territory. This anima serves as the foundation for the game’s magical system, empowering players to perform magic spells both in and out of battle. However, this anima is not always benevolent – it has also distorted the appearances and behaviors of numerous creatures inhabiting Ashenfall, making them more aggressive towards the players, increasing their propensity for attacks. America elaborated on how magic permeates every facet of life in Ashenfall:

As I journey through this strange world, I’ve noticed that the creatures here have been transformed by some sort of energy seeping up from the ground – an occurrence we call the “anima twist”. For example, a common creature in the starting zone might seem familiar, but as I delve deeper into Ashenfall, it metamorphoses into something entirely different due to this mysterious anima twist.

In Ashenfall, players can harness this raw magic to improve their daily existence as well as employ it in battles, casting spells to summon fire, wind, and numerous other effects. But as America clarified, players can also master spells by enhancing survival-oriented skills like woodcutting. For instance, she described, “There are some spells where you simply spin a couple of trees down and then transform them into wood with another spell.” She added, “It’s the convenience we aim to offer in the game.

Dragons Will Be A Constant Threat And A Challenge To Face

Living in Ashenfall isn’t just about chopping trees and constructing homes like other open-world survival games. Instead, the dragons, who rule over the continent, pose a constant danger that players must confront. America clarified that dragon encounters will primarily be advanced challenges for players who feel prepared to tackle them, but the presence of dragons will be noticeable even in the game’s early stages.

From the onset of your gaming journey, dragons are an integral part of the game world. They can cause trouble for you right from the start, constantly bothering you with their flights overhead. By the time you’ve built up enough power to consider taking action against them, you might be so fed up with these dragons that you can hardly bear to see another one in the sky.

In the realm of Ashenfall, the dragons are governed by a formidable leader, the Dragon Queen – an adversary that surpasses even her minions in difficulty for players. Yet, it’s been disclosed that players won’t be able to battle the Dragon Queen right away, but this feature is expected to be introduced at a later stage. As for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, expect regular updates with smaller ones monthly, larger ones quarterly, and major ones yearly, so engaging in combat with the Dragon Queen should become an option within the game soon.
