A new update is available for the GameCube app on Nintendo Switch 2. The update brings the app to version 1.6.1. This app is a benefit for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members, but it’s only playable on the Nintendo Switch 2 – not the original Nintendo Switch.
Since its launch last June, the GameCube app has added nine games, with Nintendo gradually bringing over beloved titles from that era. Last month saw the release of Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness on Nintendo Switch, which was a first for the game – it had never been available on another platform before. Fans are also hoping for Pokemon Colosseum to come to the app, and while Nintendo has hinted at it, they haven’t provided an update recently.
Nintendo Switch Online’s New GameCube Update
The Nintendo Switch Online GameCube app has been updated to version 1.6.1. While Nintendo hasn’t detailed the changes, the update seems to fix a crashing issue in Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness that was also causing some players to lose their saved progress. Nintendo had previously recognized the problem, and this update appears to resolve it. It’s currently unknown if any other changes were included.
Nintendo doesn’t usually share detailed notes when it updates its software, but fans often discover the changes themselves. This particular update doesn’t include any new games, meaning popular GameCube titles aren’t yet available on the Nintendo Switch 2. Many players would love to see classics like the original Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime 2, and Super Smash Bros. Melee, and having them might even encourage more people to subscribe to the higher-priced Nintendo Switch Online tier. Nintendo appears to be releasing GameCube games slowly, while continuing to add games from older systems like NES and Virtual Boy.
Although the GameCube has gained popularity recently, it wasn’t a commercial success for Nintendo. Despite selling relatively few consoles, the system had a fantastic collection of games, many of which have been hard to find for years. This has driven up prices on the used market, with some GameCube titles now costing $100 or more on sites like eBay. The new Nintendo Switch 2 app is a great way for players to enjoy these classic games without spending a fortune.

The Nintendo Switch Online GameCube app has mainly offered games originally released by Nintendo. Soulcalibur 2 was the only exception, and even that version included Link as a playable character, likely making it a priority for Nintendo. It’s unclear if the app will include other games from different companies. Many fans would love to see titles like Skies of Arcadia Legends, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, Simpsons: Hit and Run, and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes added, but we’ll have to wait and see what Nintendo decides to include in future updates.
