Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, recently shared positive comments about Red Dead Online, even though the game hasn’t received major updates since 2021. Despite the lack of recent attention, it appears Take-Two doesn’t view the game as a failure.
In 2022, players of Red Dead Online held a virtual funeral for the game after a year of no major improvements. Although there have been brief moments of optimism, particularly following the Strange Tales of the West update, the game has largely remained stagnant and without substantial new content.
Red Dead Online Praised by Take-Two Interactive Head
I was reading an interview with Take-Two’s CEO, Zelnick, over on IGN, and he was really hyping up the whole Red Dead franchise, including Red Dead Online. They asked him straight up if he thought Red Dead Online was a bit of a letdown, especially when you compare it to how huge GTA Online is. He totally disagreed, saying that with Red Dead selling over 85 million copies, there’s absolutely no way it could be considered a missed opportunity, and that Red Dead Online has actually been a really big and lasting success.

He shared his personal enthusiasm for Red Dead, saying the team is incredibly proud of the game and he finds it “just amazing” and truly enjoys playing it. He also praised its graphics and gameplay, noting that it still feels modern even after nearly eight years. However, while he clearly loves the game and the franchise, these comments might frustrate fans who believe the developers shifted their attention away from Red Dead Online too quickly to prioritize Grand Theft Auto Online.
GTA Online, released almost 13 years ago, continues to receive frequent updates with new content like businesses, luxurious homes, quests, and storylines featuring characters from GTA 5. Meanwhile, Red Dead Online, which launched in late 2018, only received substantial support for three years. Players of Red Dead Online are left wondering what the game could have been, while GTA Online’s consistent success – averaging around a million dollars in revenue daily – is probably the main reason Rockstar Games is prioritizing it over RDO.

Now that Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release in 2026, it’s expected that the GTA series will be the developer’s main priority. The company has stated that GTA Online will still receive updates even after GTA 6 launches, and may even have its own online component. While a Red Dead Redemption 3 could eventually happen, it might receive more online support in the future. Currently, many Red Dead Online players are disappointed with the game’s lack of ongoing development.
