The 10 Strongest Superheroes In Games, Ranked

Many fans, including myself, would likely name Marvel’s Spider-Man and Batman: Arkham City among the best superhero games. But just because these games are excellent and feature famous heroes doesn’t automatically make them home to the most powerful characters in gaming. Surprisingly, even less popular or average games can include incredibly powerful heroes.

Fighting game characters have incredibly varied power levels, so we’re leaving them out of this list. That’s a topic for another time! Instead, we’re focusing on the most powerful superheroes and anti-heroes – whether you can actually play as them in these games or not – and ranking them based on their abilities.

While these characters might be powerful in other forms of entertainment, what truly matters is their strength and how impactful they are within the game itself.

There will be spoilers.

10. Jackie Estacado

A Demon Run Mob

In the game The Darkness, Jackie Estacado rises through the ranks to become a powerful mob boss. The sequel sees him once again making a deal with demons to enhance his abilities beyond just shooting. This time, he can use demonic tentacles to pull apart enemies or manipulate objects as weapons – even throwing a pool cue like a spear! He also commands small goblins to fight for him, retrieve items, or act as shields. However, these demonic powers come with a weakness: light, which makes Jackie susceptible to attack.

9. Phoenix

A Fiery Mage

In the X-Men comics, Phoenix is essentially Jean Grey reborn as a powerful, cosmic being. In Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, she’s still a very strong character, though not quite as cosmically powerful. Players need to purchase downloadable content and complete a specific mission to unlock her. Even at her starting level, Phoenix can control the battlefield with waves of fire that deal massive damage to multiple enemies. She can also fly, which helps her dodge attacks. While her special moves are good, they’re secondary to her overall power – she’s much more formidable in the comics than she is in this game, where her abilities are a bit limited.

Comics Phoenix is usually considered one of the strongest characters, often ranking first or second. However, she isn’t nearly as powerful in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3.

8. Wolverine

He Could Go All Day

Wolverine, a popular hero from the X-Men comics, has appeared in many video games. However, X-Men Origins: Wolverine truly captures how dangerous and powerful he is. In the comics and generally, Wolverine’s strength comes from his Adamantium skeleton, which makes him incredibly durable and gives him virtually indestructible claws. He also has a powerful healing ability that slows aging and prevents death. While players can be defeated in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game, Wolverine quickly recovers health during missions, making him a relentless and unstoppable force.

7. Viewtiful Joe

Controlling Time And Looking Cool While Doing It

Joe, the star of the Viewtiful Joe series, consistently uses similar abilities throughout most of the games. He starts as a regular movie fan, but gains superpowers that let him transform into a red-suited hero to battle villains.

When Joe wears his special suit, he can control time. Slowing time down helps him avoid attacks and makes his hits much stronger. Speeding it up allows him to attack incredibly quickly. Any hero with time-based powers has a significant edge in battle.

6. Symbiote Spider-Man (Peter Parker)

Infused With Venom

In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, players can switch between playing as Peter Parker and Miles Morales. While both are powerful heroes, Peter has a slight edge. The game’s story is based on the classic Venom comic book arc, but with a unique spin from the game developers. Peter gains enhanced abilities when he uses the black suit, becoming incredibly agile and gaining powerful attacks that could challenge even The Hulk. Later, he unlocks the Anti-Venom suit, which is an exceptionally strong power-up that lets him control Venom rather than be controlled by it. This late-game ability is like a super boost – similar to getting a temporary power-up in a game – making this version of Peter the most powerful Spider-Man yet.

5. The Hulk

You Wouldn’t Like Him When He’s Angry

Okay, so The Hulk is a Marvel legend, and he’s shown up in a bunch of games over the years. If you know the story, scientist Bruce Banner turns into the Hulk when he gets super angry and exposed to radiation. I recently played The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, and it’s awesome! Playing as the Hulk is just… empowering. Seriously, he’s almost impossible to take down, unbelievably fast for how big he is, and can wreck anything. I mean, tearing cars apart and running up buildings? Yes, please! He can even turn metal into boxing gloves with his fists! Even though the Hulk is supposed to be even stronger in the comics and movies, this game still lets you feel like a total powerhouse. If you want to just smash stuff and feel unstoppable, you should definitely check it out.

4. The Boss

Breaking The Fourth Wall Of Superhero Reality

In Saints Row 4, you play as The Boss, the leader of the 3rd Street Saints who unexpectedly becomes President of the United States. When aliens attack, you’re trapped in a virtual world where you gain superpowers with the help of your crew. As you progress, you can customize The Boss with abilities like flight, freezing enemies, super speed, and telekinesis. While incredibly powerful within the simulation (except during the final mission), these powers aren’t natural – The Boss relies on technology and armor to use them. Despite the gadgets, The Boss is a force to be reckoned with.

3. Alex Mercer

The Anti-Hulk

Radical Entertainment, the studio behind The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, created Prototype. The game centers around Alex Mercer, a man transformed by a virus that gives him incredible powers. He can reshape his body – turning his arms into blades or powerful fists, for example. Alex can also absorb the DNA of anyone he encounters, allowing him to perfectly mimic their appearance – essentially the ultimate disguise. He’s incredibly agile, able to scale buildings and glide through the city, and these are just a few of his core abilities. Thanks to his powers, Alex is a force to be reckoned with.

2. Cole MacGrath

Letting The Beast Out

I play as Cole MacGrath in the first two inFAMOUS games, and he’s seriously powerful, especially in the second one. Basically, I’m covered in electricity, so I can blast enemies with all sorts of attacks. It’s awesome – I can even ride on power lines like a super-charged train and glide around New Marais. What’s really cool is that I can also steal powers from these two new characters, Lucy and Nix. Lucy controls ice, and Nix has fire, so I can add those to my moveset, which is a huge help!

In inFAMOUS 2, players’ choices really matter. If you play as a villain, you can unlock the ability to become the main antagonist, The Beast. This transforms Cole into an incredibly powerful being, almost like a god, with abilities that haven’t been seen in games before – and it’s a truly frightening prospect.

1. Phenomaman

A Noble Hero Who Could Go Nuclear

Phenomaman is a highly respected and incredibly powerful superhero in the world of Dispatch. However, his life falls apart relatively early in the game. He’s an alien who arrived on Earth years ago and possesses classic superpowers like super strength, flight, and speed. But it’s his ability to absorb power that’s truly frightening – he claims he could even absorb the sun’s energy and destroy the planet. While he’s making this threat out of depression rather than malice, it highlights a genuinely terrifying capability. It’s a power that should be taken very seriously.

Bonus Top Pick: Saitama

We debated including Saitama in the game. He’s less of a developed character and more of a gameplay element in One-Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows, but he is technically the most powerful superhero in any game. Just like in the manga and anime, he defeats every enemy with a single punch, no matter how strong they are. While he couldn’t defend against a global attack like a nuclear strike, he’d win in a fair one-on-one fight.
