The Argument For and Against Traveller’s Tales LEGO Game Remakes

The Argument For and Against Traveller's Tales LEGO Game Remakes

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I find myself torn between the prospect of Traveller’s Tales remaking some of its classic LEGO games and the potential for fresh, innovative gameplay. On one hand, the sheer number of iconic LEGO titles is enough to make any nostalgia-filled gamer salivate at the thought of revisiting these beloved classics with updated graphics and possibly even tweaked gameplay mechanics.

Over the past two decades, Traveller’s Tales has achieved significant triumphs primarily due to its collaboration with the LEGO franchise. Since releasing its first LEGO-themed game in 2005, the team has dedicated itself solely to developing LEGO games starting from 2009. With nearly two decades of expertise in the LEGO universe, Traveller’s Tales has amassed an extensive collection of games spanning numerous well-known intellectual properties.

Given the wealth of games they have, one might wonder if any of these titles warrant a modern update or remake. Remakes are quite popular nowadays, making them an attractive prospect for developers who can draw from their collection of classic games. However, it’s debatable whether Traveller’s Tales should pursue this path, and maybe it would be wiser to focus on new projects instead.

Traveller’s Tales Remakes Could Go A Couple Different Ways

Traveller’s Tales Has Great LEGO Games To Put Back Out

It might be advantageous for Traveller’s Tales to redevelop LEGO games, given the wide variety of choices they could offer. Over two decades of focusing on a single franchise, it’s only natural that a diverse range of titles emerges. Notably, Traveller’s Tales has demonstrated a commendable track record of producing high-quality games under the LEGO label, appealing to audiences across age groups.

Furthermore, LEGO boasts a wealth of well-known intellectual properties that can be utilized. For quite some time now, gamers have been treated to numerous iterations of the LEGO Star Wars series, but it’s not just Star Wars where LEGO excels; they also produce games based on iconic franchises such as Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, comic book giants like Marvel and DC Comics, and even some titles inspired by Disney and Pixar movies. Given Traveller’s Tales’ knack for moving between different IPs while maintaining commercial success, there is ample opportunity for them to build upon their past accomplishments.

It Might Be A Waste Of Time To Remake LEGO Games

Essentially, if Traveller’s Tales decides to remake their older games, they might find themselves in a challenging position because remakes are typically aimed at addressing issues like smoothing out dated gameplay mechanics. However, the LEGO games have not seen significant changes in terms of gameplay over time, which means there isn’t much for Traveller’s Tales to improve or “fix” in their older LEGO games.

One advantage of remakes is enhancing accessibility, as they offer fans an updated version of games that were previously difficult to obtain. However, in the case of LEGO games, many popular titles are easily accessible on current platforms and continue to play smoothly even now. Given that these games haven’t aged significantly or shown signs of deterioration, it doesn’t seem necessary to invest resources into remaking a game that is already within reach for most players.

Traveller’s Tales may be pushing a boulder up a hill if it chooses to remake older games.

Traveller’s Tales Should Focus On The Future Of LEGO

In the not too distant past, developers at Traveller’s Tales have introduced significant modifications in their LEGO game titled “LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga” released in 2022. Notably, the combat system has been dramatically revamped to incorporate an over-the-shoulder camera perspective similar to contemporary action games – a departure from the established combat formula that this franchise has adhered to for quite some time. Given these substantial changes, it appears prudent to focus on the future rather than clinging to the past with this transformation by Traveller’s Tales.

In addition, it appears that the LEGO brand is venturing into more innovative territories in its video game lineup. This is demonstrated by the open-world survival expansion LEGO Fortnite and the upcoming LEGO Horizon Adventures developed by Guerrilla Games. It seems that The LEGO Group aims to keep its gamers engaged beyond relying on past achievements with the LEGO titles, and instead, strive for new ways to bring joy to fans of these games. Perhaps Traveller’s Tales could follow suit and prioritize creating fresh content over relying too heavily on previous successes.
