Introduction
There’s a certain charm to video games that are just… good. They might not be groundbreaking or perfect, but they’re enjoyable and often have a lot to offer. Perhaps it’s the feeling of unrealized potential, or simply a game that’s reliably solid. Whatever the reason, not every game needs to be a classic to be fun! Let’s explore some of the best strategy games released recently that fall into this ‘comfortably good’ category.
Tom Clancy EndWar

Tom Clancy’s EndWar launched during a really experimental period in gaming. The Wii was popularizing motion controls, the Xbox was trying out Project Natal (Milo), Crysis had just pushed graphics to a new level, and even the PlayStation 3 had that unusual motion-sensing controller. New game series were appearing everywhere! EndWar, a standard real-time strategy game, needed something special to get noticed, especially since strategy games weren’t huge on consoles at the time. Instead of improving controls or the interface, it went with voice commands! While the game itself is fairly average overall, it’s still fun to play because of how unique and futuristic the voice control feature felt.
Omerta: City of Gangsters
I had a tough choice between including Empire of Sin and Omerta: City of Gangsters – both are decent games, around a 7 out of 10. Since I reviewed Empire of Sin a while ago, I’ll go with Omerta. It really nails the 1920s gangster vibe, combining city building with turn-based battles reminiscent of Jagged Alliance. However, like many games in that score range, it doesn’t quite come together perfectly. It lacks the depth and freedom you’d hope for, the turn-based combat can be frustrating due to its cover system, and the animations are pretty basic. I’d consider it a good strategy game to pick up on sale, and if you’re a fan of the roaring twenties, it’s definitely worth checking out.
Gears Tactics

I called Gears Tactics a surprisingly frustrating game, and here’s why. As a lifelong Gears of War and Xbox fan – I grew up with games like Halo, Blinx, and Gears – I was incredibly hyped when Gears Tactics was announced. The concept – XCOM-style strategy with the Gears universe and characters – seemed like a dream come true. However, despite being a solid game, several issues held it back from being truly great, earning it a 7 out of 10 from me. The campaign felt static, maps became repetitive, and squad customization was limited. Unexpected difficulty spikes also disrupted the flow. That said, it wasn’t a total letdown. Gears Tactics innovated combat with extra action points and a combo system that rewarded aggressive, melee-focused play – essential for a Gears game, and especially for those satisfying chainsaw kills.
