The show consistently highlighted that beneath his strange quirks, frightening anger, and longing for affection, he was a product of Vought International. The company created him in a lab, exploited his weaknesses, shaped him into a perfect public image, and then left him emotionally neglected. This troubled upbringing made him a fascinating villain, but Season 5 weakened that complexity by portraying Homelander as purely evil and letting Vought avoid responsibility for its role in creating him.

Homelander remained a compelling figure, and everything he did – his actions, looks, and even his thoughts – fueled the dark comedy and intense violence of The Boys. Season 5 of the show initially seemed poised to continue exploring how power structures create dangerous people, but ultimately it appeared to lose sight of that core idea.

The Boys’ Main Villain Was Vought, Not Homelander

The first season of The Boys revealed that despite his immense power and cruel behavior, Homelander was deeply vulnerable and, in a way, a product of his upbringing. The show highlighted that he was created, not born, showing flashbacks of a cold, sterile childhood in a laboratory where he received no affection. Characters within the show, like Stillwell, Edgar, and Vogelbaum, confirmed that Vought intentionally molded him into a weapon they could control, but they lost control as he grew more powerful. Even his most terrible actions were linked back to Vought’s influence, and his constant need for approval stemmed from the company’s focus on branding and image. While The Boys never justified Homelander’s crimes, it presented him as a frightening consequence of a system driven by profit, celebrity culture, and corporate greed.

As a long-time fan, I was really disappointed with Season 5. It just threw away everything that made Homelander so compelling – all the layers and complexity. The finale felt like a huge letdown, honestly. They turned him into a one-dimensional villain, like just getting rid of him would fix everything. It felt wrong because earlier seasons brilliantly showed that Homelander was a product of Vought, completely reliant on them. Instead of exploring that, they made his downfall seem personal. And the worst part? Vought itself got away with everything! They’re still thriving, even after all the terrible things they’ve done. It completely undermined the show’s core message – the idea that it wasn’t about one bad person, but about a corrupt system. By letting Vought survive, The Boys kind of destroyed its own powerful critique of corporate power, which is what I loved about it in the first place.

Even With a Fumbled Ending, Homelander Was a Highlight of The Boys

Anthony Starr’s Performance Received Critical Acclaim

Anthony Starr received widespread praise for his performance throughout all five seasons of The Boys, even though viewers sometimes disagreed about how quickly the story moved or if it stayed consistent. The fifth season, and especially its ending, proved particularly controversial. Many fans felt the finale diminished Homelander, turning a complex and troubled character into a typical villain. Some also believed that the continued success of Vought International left the story feeling unfinished, like The Boys didn’t quite reach its full potential.

The ending could have been more impactful if Homelander’s downfall also meant the downfall of Vought International, maybe by revealing the company’s secrets and causing its collapse. While some viewers might be satisfied with how the villain’s story ended, it would have been stronger if his character hadn’t become overly exaggerated in the final episodes.
