The Great CBDC Conundrum!
Ah, Senator Cruz, that man of principle! ๐ค He’s gone and done it again, introduced a bill to stop the Federal Reserve from issuing a central bank digital currency (CBDC). This “Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act” โ a title that sounds more like a bad sci-fi film than a piece of legislation, wouldn’t you say? โ would prevent the Fed from offering certain products or services directly to Americans. A rather bold move, like trying to stop a runaway train with a wet noodle.
You see, this bill is like a pair of fraternal twins, mirroring a similar bill introduced by Representative Tom Emmer from Minnesota. They’re practically identical, these two bills, as if they were hatched from the same political egg. Both proclaim that the prohibition wouldn’t apply to any dollar-denominated currency that’s open, permissionless, and private. As if those things ever go together in the wild world of politics! ๐
Since 2020, the Federal Reserve has been toying with the idea of a digital dollar. They have several research projects bubbling away, like a cauldron of political intrigue! ๐ฎ Cruz, however, has been a staunch opponent of this digital dollar dream since, well, forever it seems. He’s introduced legislation after legislation to stop it, like a dog chasing its own tail. And Emmer, he’s not far behind, declaring that CBDC technology is “inherently un-American” โ a statement so bold it practically screams for a good laugh! ๐คฃ
Critics of CBDCs, they’re a chorus of doom, warning of privacy infringements and government overreach. They see a dystopian future where Big Brother controls every penny you earn! But some nations, bless their hearts, are still exploring this digital money frontier. The Europeans are pushing for a digital Euro, Israel wants a digital shekel, and Iran is about to launch its own CBDC, presumably with a side of revolutionary fervor. ๐ฎ๐ท
But here in the good ol’ US of A, the CBDC dream has hit a wall. Donald Trump, bless his heart, vowed to never allow a CBDC in the country. And Jerome Powell, the chair of the Federal Reserve, has said that the Fed won’t issue a CBDC while he’s in charge. So, for now, at least, the digital dollar remains a distant dream, a phantom on the horizon. ๐ป
Perhaps, one day, we’ll all be swiping our digital dollars at the supermarket, but until then, we can all laugh at the absurdity of it all. ๐ธ
