The Legend of Korra: How Does the United Republic of Nations Even Work?

One of the most compelling aspects of the Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra world is its complex political landscape. This setup fueled many significant conflicts, such as the Fire Lords’ aggressive expansion and Kuvira’s campaign to create the Earth Empire. Although Aang aimed to maintain the existing world order, he and his companions inadvertently changed history by establishing the United Republic of Nations, a completely new nation.

The idea for the United Republic of Nations first appeared in the comics based on Avatar: The Last Airbender. We really saw it come to life in The Legend of Korra, starting with the very first episode. Over time, the show revealed how this nation worked, offering a hopeful look at the future, but also showing how old patterns of conflict and selfishness threatened to destroy it. Despite its good intentions and achievements, the United Republic of Nations wasn’t perfect, and still faced problems caused by flawed leaders and those with bending abilities.

Aang and Zuko Gave Land to People Who Needed it the Most

The world almost suffered complete destruction due to poor leadership in the Fire Nation. Fire Lord Sozin selfishly believed he had the right to expand his country’s territory and control the world, regardless of the wishes of others. This destructive path ended with Fire Lord Zuko, who, with the help of Avatar Aang, brought peace. However, the damage was lasting. While recently established Fire Nation colonies were easily dismantled and their people relocated, the colony of Yu Dao presented a different challenge. It had become too deeply rooted to simply remove, so Aang and Zuko decided to transform Yu Dao into a completely new and independent nation.

Yu Dao established the first international organization in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. This new United Republic of Nations served as a neutral space for people from all nations, prioritizing collaboration and shared optimism over national loyalties. It was built on land ceded from the Earth Kingdom – the only nation with enough room – with the King’s permission. However, his daughter, Hou-Ting, and the ambitious metalbender Kuvira both disagreed with this arrangement.

Both Hou-Ting and Kuvira saw the United Republic as an unfair nation built on land taken from the Earth Kingdom – essentially, a large extension of the Fire Nation. It’s a sad twist of fate that a place founded with good intentions actually created more conflict. Aang had hoped to bring harmony to the world, and within its borders, the United Republic did achieve that. However, the loss of Earth Kingdom land fueled the rise of Kuvira’s aggressive new empire, as well as the disorder caused by Zaheer. Korra, as Aang’s successor, discovered that such compromises, while helpful to some, can also deeply upset others, proving that true balance is a difficult and often personal goal.

The Fifth Nation Combined the Best of the First Four

Seventy years passed between the events surrounding Yu Dao and Avatar Korra’s arrival in Republic City, giving the United Republic of Nations plenty of time to establish itself and develop a unique identity on the world stage. While The Legend of Korra primarily showcased the bustling city of Republic City and the results of its industrial growth, this was enough to clearly demonstrate the United Republic’s character and how it operated. The nation itself is large and rich in resources, but the show focused on its urban center.

One of the surprising things about this new nation is that it simply replaced old problems with new ones – instead of fighting in international wars, the country now struggled with tension between those who could bend the elements and those who couldn’t. For years, a governing council mostly made up of benders controlled things from Republic City, until a revolutionary named Amon, who was a powerful bloodbender and used advanced technology, decided to fight for equality. Interestingly, Amon was right to point out this imbalance, and it took his rebellion for the heroes to finally understand the problem at the heart of the United Republic of Nations. As a result, the nation now has a president, and everyone gets to vote for their leaders. By the second season of The Legend of Korra, this made the United Republic of Nations the only democracy in the world.

Despite ongoing political challenges and lingering tensions, the United Republic of Nations is a truly remarkable place. It’s become the hopeful vision Aang and Zuko shared: a thriving society built on cooperation and understanding. While each of the original four nations remains strong on its own, the United Republic offers something more – a unique blend of cultures and knowledge that has created a world leader in progress and innovation. It’s more than just peaceful relations between countries; it’s a powerful combination of different traditions and technologies.

The United Republic of Nations is a global hub for advancements in technology and medicine, bringing together knowledge and innovation from around the world. This has even influenced bending techniques – earthbending became more refined for city fighting, while waterbending grew more forceful, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with the elements and impacting the sport of pro bending. Unique bending styles like metalbending and lightning generation have flourished here, powering everything from electricity to transportation and construction, as demonstrated by the police force led by Toph and Lin.

Although the United Republic of Nations faced challenges and wasn’t perfect – experiencing setbacks from groups like the Equalists and leaders like President Raiko – it ultimately achieved its goal. It established a place where people could thrive and look forward to the future, free from the constraints of old national conflicts and prejudice. This makes its founding a landmark achievement and provides a dynamic new backdrop for Korra’s adventures.
