As a dedicated fan of the Legend of Zelda series, I must say that the Gerudo have truly left their mark on this iconic franchise. From powerful warriors like Urbosa to the cunning sorceresses Koume and Koutake, these fierce women have proven time and again that they are forces to be reckoned with.
As a fervent enthusiast exploring the rich tapestry of cultures in Hyrule, I find the Gerudo to be particularly captivating. This remarkable race is predominantly composed of formidable, highly revered female warriors who inhabit the expansive desert expanse. Rarely, every hundred years, a male is born among them.
Since their debut in “Ocarina of Time,” the Gerudo have been a recurring element in the “Legend of Zelda” series, known for their prominent roles and strong warrior culture. Many influential characters hail from this race within the franchise. True to their cultural background, they are among the most powerful warriors featured in these games. Here are the strongest Gerudo characters you’ll encounter.
6 Captain Aveil – Majora’s Mask
The Fearsome Captain Of The Gerudo Pirates
In the game Majora’s Mask, you’ll notice that it borrowed many elements from its predecessor, Ocarina of Time. This reuse led to an intriguing premise where a menacing pirate gang, composed entirely of Gerudo women, emerged. These Gerudo Pirates wreaked havoc in the region known as the Great Bay Area of Termina. They were the culprits behind the theft of Lulu’s Zora Eggs, with their captain being the notorious figure named Aveil.
Similar to most women within their community, Aveil stands out as a powerful and esteemed warrior, showcasing this in her fierce battle against Link. However, what sets her apart from other Gerudo is that she commands a band of pirate warriors, making her all the more imposing. Regrettably, there’s an unforeseen vulnerability to Aveil – she harbors an intense fear of bees.
5 Nabooru – Ocarina of Time
The Iconic Sage Of Spirit
It was shrewdly innovative for Nintendo to incorporate a kind-hearted Gerudo ally for Link in the game, “Ocarina of Time.” This move demonstrated that not all Gerudos are faithful to their wicked ruler, Ganondorf. Among them was none other than Nabooru, who eventually became one of the most iconic Gerudo characters within the series.
Nabooru shares her sisters’ physical combat prowess, yet boasts unique strengths. At one instance, she was manipulated by Koume and Kotake into an Iron Knuckle, showcasing her immense power when Link found it necessary to fight her reluctantly. Furthermore, Nabooru earned the title of the Great Sage of Spirit, proving her formidable ability to seal Ganondorf alongside other Sages.
4 Makeela Riju – Breath of the Wild
The Young But Respected Leader Of The Gerudo
Initially introduced in the game Breath of the Wild, the young and esteemed Gerudo leader, Makeela Riju, played a pivotal role as an ally for Link during his adventure. Her significant contributions include using the Thunder Helm and aiding Link’s access into the Gerudo’s Divine Beast, Vah Naboris. It was evident that Riju was both courageous and proficient, yet she also showed signs of needing further guidance.
In a delightful turn of events for the sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, Riju teams up with Link in battle. Her combat skills with her two scimitars have greatly improved, and she possesses the ability to control lightning similar to her ancestor Urbosa, earning her the title of Sage of Lightning. Now, by using her Secret Stone, Link can call upon Riju’s spirit whenever he needs to harness her electric powers.
3 Koume & Koutake (Twinrova) – Ocarina of Time
The Villainous Sorceresses Of Flame & Ice
Given that the central antagonist throughout the series is a Gerudo, it’s quite logical that fellow members of this race might side with the Evil King as well. Koume and Koutake appear to be among Ganondorf’s most significant allies. They are not only loyal to him but also served as his surrogate mothers, nurturing him in their care.
Should being devoted servants to Ganondorf not be considered impressive enough, Koume and Kotake demonstrate significant power as witches with a command over elemental spells. Koume is recognized as the Mistress of Flame, while Kotake is known as the Mistress of Ice. Moreover, they possess the ability to manipulate other characters’ minds, forcing them to obey their commands. However, their most fearsome power lies in their capacity to merge and transform into a formidable fire and ice witch called Twinrova. In this formidable state, they posed a challenge to adult Link during their battle, but the Hero of Time ultimately triumphed by employing their own elemental magic against them.
2 Urbosa – Breath of the Wild
The Glorious Gerudo Champion With Powerful Thunder Magic
In the chronology of “Breath of the Wild”, Urbosa was revered and adored as the foremost figure among the Gerudo tribe. This esteem stemmed from her role as the mighty Gerudo Champion, who commanded Vah Naboris, a divine beast. Her prowess in battle was further underscored by her skillful use of sword, shield, and her formidable thunder magic, which allowed her to summon lightning at will with a simple snap of her fingers.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but marvel at Urbosa’s exceptional combat skills, matched by her robust physique and indomitable spirit. Her unwavering commitment to shield Princess Zelda was legendary. In many ways, she mirrored the other Champions. However, the cruel hand of Thunderblight Ganon took Urbosa’s life when she was ensnared within Vah Naboris. Yet, death couldn’t suppress her spirit. She continues to live on, inspiring fellow Gerudo warriors with her courageous example, notably Riju. Moreover, even after her passing, her spirit stood by Link in his struggle against Calamity Ganon.
1 Ganondorf – Various Games
The Evil Demon King & The Main Antagonist Of The Series
Despite Ganon being present long before the creation of the Gerudo tribe, as presented in Ocarina of Time, it was revealed that Ganondorf, the villain’s humanoid form, belonged to this newly introduced race. This significant revelation links the Gerudo with the main adversary in the Legend of Zelda series.
In the entire series, Ganondorf stands out as the strongest character among the Gerudo, a testament to his possession of the Triforce of Power. He exhibits immense physical strength, excels in handling various types of blades, and wields powerful magic with ease. His abilities extend to summoning and controlling malevolent creatures. His signature move is transforming into a colossal beast, which ranges from a giant boar or dragon, making it nearly impossible for opponents to defeat him. Additionally, certain manifestations of Ganondorf have the ability to survive after death, spreading evil throughout Hyrule. The most notable instance of this phenomenon can be seen in Calamity Ganon from Breath of the Wild.
It’s interesting to note that with each new appearance, Ganondorf seems to grow even stronger. The version of him in “Tears of the Kingdom” is among the strongest characters ever seen in a “Legend of Zelda” game. Given his status as a memorable villain, it’s likely we’ll continue seeing him as a formidable opponent in future games.
