The Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG, which also incorporates deckbuilding elements, recently exceeded expectations on its BackerKit crowdfunding campaign. Renegade Game Studios teamed up with author Matt Dinniman to officially license the game, raising an impressive $13.3 million from nearly 56,000 backers – far surpassing its initial $250,000 goal. Notably, details about the tabletop RPG reveal it will include a system similar to a Battle Pass.
There are two versions of the Dungeon Crawler Carl game. The first is a traditional tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) called The Official Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG. The second is Dungeon Crawler Carl Unstoppable, a card game you can play alone or with others where you build a deck. Interestingly, the TTRPG includes a Battle Pass – a first for tabletop games! It seems like a typical Dungeon Crawler Carl experience: it’s set in the World Dungeon universe and includes everything you’d expect, like rulebooks, different character options (races, classes, backgrounds, and skills), and physical and digital accessories such as dice, GM screens, journals, and miniatures.
The Official Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG’s TTRPG Battle Pass Explained
So, about the RPG I’m backing – they’re calling it a ‘Season Pass,’ but honestly, it’s basically a Battle Pass. TomeHero pointed it out, and it gives you extra digital content (maybe even some physical stuff!) released over time. It’s included if you pledged at a higher tier, but you can also grab it separately for $30. This first Season runs for a whole year – November 2026 to October 2027 – which is pretty cool, but it looks like we’ll all have to buy Season 2 when that comes out eventually.

The Season Pass will feature 10 digital items released throughout the season, but details about when they’ll be available and any requirements to unlock them haven’t been announced yet. These items will likely be tailored to the season’s special campaigns, useful for creating your own adventures, and include new content based on the latest Dungeon Crawler Carl books. Here’s a general overview of what’s planned for Season Pass 1:
- Neighborhoods for GMs to drop straight into their campaigns
- Threats! Bosses, Mobs, and dangerous NPCs
- Additional Classes & Races
- Pre-gens of your favorite Crawlers, play them or use them as NPCs
- More Skills, Magic Items, and Weapons
- Loot items and Rewards to drop into your game
Season Pass holders will receive a lot of extra content for the game. It’s a little strange that the Crawler pre-generated characters weren’t included with the initial release. While Carl and Princess Donut will be available, it’s unclear if other popular characters like Grim, Pony, Miriam, Florin, and Lucia will be as well, or if players who didn’t back the project will have to buy them separately.

Games like Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder do have digital content and subscription services for new releases, but the way they deliver it differs from some newer approaches. Their content is generally widely available for everyone to use. However, restricting content to timed seasonal unlocks might seem strange, especially for players who are new to tabletop role-playing games.
