For three decades, PlayStation consoles have been a major force in gaming, and the PlayStation 5 is continuing that success. In fact, it’s outselling all Xbox consoles combined. While the PS5’s launch was difficult due to supply chain issues caused by the pandemic, it’s still achieved remarkable sales figures over the past five years.
The PlayStation 5 had a gradual start, but after five years on the market, it’s firmly established itself as a strong successor to the PS4. With popular exclusive games like Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei, Astro Bot, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the PS5 offers a compelling gaming experience. Even with more big games still to come – including highly anticipated titles like GTA 6 – the console is already selling better than its main competitor, the Xbox.
The PS5’s Sales Have Officially Beaten Every Xbox Console
- The PS5 has sold 84.2 million copies.
- The PS5 has even surpassed the Xbox 360, Microsoft’s best-selling console.
- The official Xbox 360 sales numbers have it at 84 million units sold.
- Sony’s best-selling console is still the PS2, with an estimated 160 million units sold.
According to IGN, the PlayStation 5 has now surpassed the Xbox 360 in sales. While the difference isn’t huge, it’s a significant achievement for Sony. It’s worth remembering that Microsoft hasn’t updated the Xbox 360’s sales figures since 2014, so the Xbox 360 might still be slightly ahead. Nevertheless, with the PS5 expected to continue selling strongly for years to come, this suggests Sony is on track to eventually outsell Xbox overall.
This year, we’ve started hearing rumors about both the PlayStation 6 and a possible handheld console from Sony. Both Sony and Microsoft have been talking about what’s next for their gaming systems, but Microsoft has especially suggested they’re moving away from making games only for their own consoles. Games that used to be exclusive to Xbox, like Gears of War and Halo, are now being released on the PS5, which makes the PlayStation console even more appealing.
Currently, only Sony and Microsoft have detailed plans for their next consoles. Given the PS5’s success, it will be interesting to see how the PS6 improves upon it and what new features it offers.
