`The Rookie’s 500-Year Legacy: Uncovering the Forgotten Hero of Halo 3: ODST`

In the lunar colony of Luna on Earth, which later became known as Luna, a man named Jonathan Doherty was born on February 9, 2525. However, for devoted fans of Halo 3: ODST, this man is simply referred to as “the Rookie.” Unlike other protagonists in the Halo series, such as Master Chief or the Arbiter, who have a more significant presence across the franchise’s various media, the Rookie has garnered considerable fame and intrigue among fans. As he turns -500 years old this year, let’s delve deeper into Doherty’s life, demise, and legacy.

The Life and Military Career of Jonathan Doherty

As a fan, I find myself reflecting on the extraordinary circumstances surrounding my birth. Born on the core world colony of Luna, humanity was still grappling with the recent encounter, six days prior, with the enigmatic multi-species religious alliance known as the Covenant. This momentous event unfolded near the outer colony world of Harvest, a distant 11.83 light-years from our Sol System. The First Battle of Harvest, a secret to the UNSC and therefore likely unknown to my family, was still underway.

My early life and extended family remain largely shrouded in mystery, but by the time I turned five in 2530, my future teammate Michael Crespo would make his entrance into the world, in Crisium City, right here on Luna.

2547 saw me, at 22 years old, joining the UNSC Marine Corps as the Human-Covenant War raged on. In the final year of this war, 2552, I was promoted to Lance Corporal and was handpicked for the elite special operations unit, the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (ODST). As an ODST, I found myself initially with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Force in the Battle of New Jerusalem. Tragically, most of our comrades from the 26th were lost in that battle, but I and fellow ODSTs Carlo Hoya and future Alpha-Nine teammate Kojo Agu were among the few survivors. Post-war, both Hoya and Agu went on to become Spartan-IVs.

The Rookie’s Experience in The Raid of Mount Haven

After the loss at New Jerusalem, Doherty was assigned to Mount Haven on a yet undisclosed alien planet, as depicted in the short story “Dirt” from the 2009 anthology “Halo: Evolutions – Tales of the Halo Universe“. The narrative primarily revolves around the critically injured ODST, Gage Yevgenny, recounting his life and military experiences to Doherty. During a raid, Yevegenny made an effort to rescue children from a bank but was fatally wounded by renegade ODSTs before commandeering a Pelican dropship laden with Forerunner artifacts and a Shiva-class nuclear weapon. Yevgenny instructed Doherty to flee, and shortly after, he detonated the nuke when Covenant forces and rogue ODSTs arrived at the crash site. In the end, Doherty was the lone survivor among the ODSTs of Mount Haven.

In the game Halo 3: ODST, you might have noticed the initials J.D. on a Rookie’s armor, but it wasn’t until the release of the Halo Encyclopedia in 2022 that we learned his full name was Jonathan Doherty.

The Post-War Career and Death of Jonathan Doherty

Following the Attack on Mount Haven, Doherty was recalled to Earth due to the collapse of Reach, and then joined the ODST team Alpha-Nine, under the 103rd Shock Troops Battalion. Known as “Rookie” by his comrades, Alpha-Nine were initially tasked with boarding the Prophet of Regret’s vessel, the Solemn Penance, during the Battle of Earth in Halo 3: ODST. However, Doherty was covertly reassigned by ONI agent Veronica Dare. When the Penance leaped into slipspace, Doherty lost consciousness for six hours in his drop pod over New Mombasa. In this city, he traced the actions of his squad and eventually met up with Dare again, helping her retrieve a Huragok named Quick to Adjust.

After reuniting with the rest of their team, Alpha-Nine, Dare and Doherty managed to flee from the destruction of New Mombasa. Soon after, Doherty discovered that his family had been wiped out by Covenant attacks on Luna. As part of Operation: JOINT MONITOR, he and his squad went to ensure no traces of the Flood remained near Voi city. Approximately a year following the end of the Human-Covenant war in 2554, Alpha-Nine was stationed on Draco III, as depicted in the 2015 novel “Halo: New Blood.” On this planet, Doherty was captured and eventually killed by Captain Ingridson of the United Rebel Front. His body was given a sea burial on Draco III, but the loss of their comrade caused Alpha-Nine to disband. Dutch Miles chose to retire, while the rest joined the Spartan-IV program.

The Impact and Legacy of Jonathan “The Rookie” Doherty

In contrast to Master Chief, who had his unique voice and habits, Bungie created Doherty as a mute protagonist, only making sounds when significantly injured. This choice was made to help players connect more deeply with the Rookie, rather than Master Chief, who was already an established character. The Rookie’s silent demeanor and role as a player-vessel can be seen as a precursor to Noble Six from Halo: Reach, whose design allowed for customization of armor and gender, taking this concept further. Although Noble Six has more dialogues than Doherty, both characters serve as blank slate characters that players can easily identify with in their gaming experience.

2009 marked the debut of players controlling characters other than super-soldiers or skilled alien warriors in the game Halo 3: ODST. Since their visual introduction in Halo 2, fans have been eager to delve deeper into the lives and roles of the ODSTs. The Rookie, a character introduced in this game, allowed players to experience life as an ODST for the first time, immersing them in the desolate, mysterious streets of New Mombasa. Despite their vulnerability, ODSTs were still formidable opponents, and many players grew fond of these lesser-known characters in the Halo universe, moving beyond the focus on Spartans. Even today, there is a strong desire among fans to return to the battlefields of Hell in future Halo games, inspired by Bungie’s success with the Rookie character.
