Anime and manga aimed at young boys, known as “shonen,” is the most popular type of content, and many of the most famous series fall into this category. The 1990s are often remembered as a peak time for shonen anime, but while many shows were great, a few stood out for being particularly bad.
Anime fans are always quick to share their opinions, praising the shows they love and criticizing those they don’t. MyAnimeList is a good resource for understanding what fans generally think. In the case of these action-packed anime from the 1990s, fan reactions tended to be negative.
1990: Violence Jack: Hell’s Wind – 5.58
Go Nagai is famous for creating bold and often surprising stories. Unfortunately, like many manga artists, his work isn’t always adapted well into other formats.
Like the previous Violence Jack OVAs, Hell’s Wind isn’t particularly good. It’s a low-budget, visually rough production that focuses more on shocking violence than a compelling story.
1991: The Abashiri Family – 5.29
Based on a series by Go Nagai, The Abashiri Family isn’t as popular as some of his other famous creations like Devilman, Mazinger Z, and Cutie Honey. The 1991 animated adaptation by Studio Pierrot didn’t help its reputation either.

High Score: 0 —
While the OVA has a certain quirky charm, it doesn’t adapt the original story very well. It could be worth a look for dedicated fans of Nagai, but compared to other OVAs from the ’90s, it’s not particularly memorable.
1992: Black Lion – 5.72
Black Lion is another anime based on a work by Nagai, specifically his ninja manga Kuro no Shishi. However, it’s not a particularly standout OVA. Like many similar series, it suffers from being an unfinished adaptation – it only covers a small part of the original manga, leaving a lot of the story untold.
This OVA has some good action and the expected level of gore for a Nagai work, but the animation isn’t particularly impressive for its time. The story is thin, focusing mostly on action and violence. While this might satisfy some fans, it doesn’t offer much depth to truly engage viewers.
1993: Ambassador Magma – 5.95
This isn’t based on a Go Nagai story; instead, it’s inspired by the work of Osamu Tezuka, a pioneer of manga. Like Nagai, Tezuka created a huge number of manga titles, and while some adaptations of his work are excellent, others aren’t as strong.
Ambassador Magma isn’t terrible, but it’s not a standout series either. Many fans appreciate it for nostalgic reasons, but the animation itself isn’t particularly impressive. It looks decent for when it was made, but don’t expect anything groundbreaking.
1994: Ninku: Tomb of Knives – 5.87
Released just before the popular 1995 anime series, Ninku: Tomb of Knives feels like a less polished precursor. While the anime has enjoyable ’90s visuals and is entertaining, Tomb of Knives has a noticeably more serious and gloomy atmosphere.
The OVA is visually appealing and manages to tell a reasonably good story within its brief 34-minute runtime. Despite this, it received some negative feedback from users on MyAnimeList. While it’s not a standout OVA, it’s definitely not among the worst.
1995: Rakushou! Hyper Doll – 5.91
I remember watching a lot of action comedies back in the ’90s, and Rakushou! Hyper Doll definitely fits that vibe. It reminded me of Dirty Pair with its two energetic female leads, but honestly, it didn’t quite hit the same way. While Dirty Pair‘s Kei and Yuri had a really special chemistry, the leads in Rakushou!, Mew and Mica, just didn’t quite click for me in the same way. They were fun, but lacked that certain something.
The series generally succeeds in recreating the look and feel of the 1990s, and the humor is usually effective. However, it doesn’t really stand out as being exceptional.
1996: Apocalypse Zero – 4.90
With a very low rating on MyAnimeList, Apocalypse Zero clearly hasn’t resonated with viewers. What caused over 5,000 users to dislike it so much?
Apocalypse Zero is definitely an unusual anime, and it’s understandable why some viewers might not enjoy it. It features a lot of intense violence and horror elements mixed with fan service, which can be off-putting. Plus, the characters aren’t particularly compelling, and the ending doesn’t feel very satisfying, leading to a generally negative reaction from many fans.
1997: The Winds of Victory – 5.47
Everyone loves classic sports anime, so what went wrong with ‘The Winds of Victory’?
There aren’t many reviews available, but the single one suggests the short OVA (around 25 minutes) doesn’t offer much in terms of story. Its brevity likely makes it hard to fully engage with, and because the series itself isn’t well-known, there’s probably not a lot of content to begin with.
1998: Ganbare Goemon: Global Rescue Operation – 5.96
The Ganbare Goemon games are much more popular in Japan than in other parts of the world. The series was successful enough to inspire a few original video animations (OVAs) in the 1990s.
Although not many anime fans appear to have seen Global Rescue Operation, it still manages a rating of just under 6.0 on MyAnimeList, based on scores from only 148 users. There’s little information available about why, but it’s among the lowest-rated OVAs on the platform.
1999: Break-Age – 6.01
1999 was a surprisingly good year for shonen anime, even though Break-Age received a modest 6.01 rating. As one of many mecha series from that decade, Break-Age had an intriguing concept, but it didn’t connect with fans as strongly as other popular ‘90s mecha shows like Evangelion, Patlabor, or The Vision of Escaflowne.
I’m really into mecha anime, and Break-Age does something a little different – instead of giant robots being, well, real, it’s all about virtual robots! You get to customize your own robot avatar and pilot it in the game world, which I think is a cool twist. Honestly though, it’s only one episode long, an OVA, and I suspect that’s why it hasn’t gotten as much attention as some of the bigger mecha series. It’s a shame, because the concept is neat!
