Leon S. Kennedy has become a central figure in the Resident Evil series. First appearing in Resident Evil 2 (1998) as a less seasoned counterpart to Chris Redfield, he’s evolved over the last three decades into arguably the most recognizable face of the franchise, culminating in a celebrated role in Resident Evil Requiem.
Characters like Chris and Jill will always be remembered as classics, but Leon stands out by adding humor and depth to the hero role—and that’s a big part of why people love him. Chris is a tough, dedicated soldier, while Leon is more like a charming adventurer, similar to James Bond or Indiana Jones—skilled, but also funny and relaxed, even in dangerous situations. However, Leon can sometimes come across as a bit cheesy or awkward. Surprisingly, this doesn’t hurt his appeal—it actually makes him even more endearing.
“Where’s Everyone Going, Bingo?” — Resident Evil 4
Okay, so playing Resident Evil 4, you immediately notice how different Leon is from the Resident Evil 2 days. He’s way more…extra, honestly. The game is full of these cheesy, over-the-top lines that really show it. I think he’s at his most goofy, but also kinda hardened, probably still dealing with everything he went through with US SOCOM after Raccoon City. You can really see that jaded confidence after the first big fight with the Ganados. It’s so weird when they just…leave after Saddler calls them off, and then Leon just drops the “bingo” line. Seriously, it’s awesome.

“No Thanks, Bro” — Resident Evil 4 (2004)
One of the most memorable lines in Resident Evil is surprisingly nonsensical. When Leon meets Ramon Salazar, Salazar says he was expecting him, and Leon replies with a casual, “No thanks, bro.” This goofy response perfectly captures Leon’s personality in that game, and it always makes me smile.
Controversially, this line was removed in the Resident Evil 4 remake.
“Give My Regards to Your God” — Resident Evil 4 (2023)
This line is one of the few times Leon says something genuinely cool without intending to be funny. He delivers it after defeating Bitores Mendez, essentially making fun of Mendez’s extreme and misguided faith. While it’s not respectful to mock someone’s beliefs, those beliefs were a result of a mind-controlling parasite, so Leon doesn’t deserve criticism for this particular remark.
“Something Tells Me He’s Not a Cop…” — Resident Evil 2 (2019)
The 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 maintains Leon as a relatively quiet character, but Capcom successfully made him feel more consistent with his later self. Specifically, the confident and cool attitude Leon develops in the original Resident Evil 4 is hinted at in the remake. A great example of this is when Leon first encounters Mr. X and casually remarks to himself. It’s funny and impressive how unfazed he seems by such a terrifying opponent – he doesn’t react like most people would.
“I Think I’m Going to Want a Second Opinion” — Resident Evil Requiem
Leon arrives at the Rhodes Chronic Care Center, where Grace is already being treated thanks to Victor Gideon. A nurse leads him to a room and tells him to wait for a doctor. When a doctor finally appears, it’s a zombie – and surprisingly, he’s wielding a chainsaw. He immediately kills the nurse, but Leon doesn’t try to save her or even react much. He simply sidesteps the infected doctor and makes a surprisingly nonchalant comment. This casual reaction, even in such a dangerous situation, is classic Leon Kennedy.
