The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie is gaining popularity again, currently ranking seventh on HBO Max in the United States. It’s performing well alongside recent releases and other popular shows. This renewed interest likely comes as the sequel, Mortal Kombat II, is scheduled to hit theaters on May 8th.
First launched in 1992 by Midway Games, Mortal Kombat is a fighting game series where players compete in a fierce martial arts tournament. The original game featured ten fighters (seven you could actually play) and centered around a battle to save Earth. However, the game’s popularity wasn’t just due to its storyline.
This game first introduced elements that would become hallmarks of the series, including its unique five-button controls and the now-famous finishing moves called Fatalities. Many critics consider Mortal Kombat one of the best video games of all time, and it quickly grew into a major franchise.
It all began with the game Mortal Kombat II in 1993, which launched numerous sequels, spin-offs, and a movie in 1995—though the film wasn’t a big hit. However, the game’s impact wasn’t solely positive. Its incredibly realistic and violent visuals sparked considerable controversy. Along with games like Night Trap and Lethal Enforcers, Mortal Kombat II helped initiate a broader discussion about the need for age ratings in the video game industry.
2021’s Mortal Kombat Offers A New Take On The Story
The 2021 film Mortal Kombat didn’t follow the storylines of previous movies. It started fresh with a new take on the classic story, focusing on Cole Young, an MMA fighter drawn into an epic battle between Earthrealm and Outworld. Directed by Simon McQuoid, the movie delivers everything fans love about the Mortal Kombat franchise.
The movie is packed with exciting, direct combat, showcasing each character’s unique skills. Beloved characters like Sub-Zero and Scorpion, played by Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada, are central to the story, and their long-standing feud delivers some of the film’s most memorable moments. These characters, along with a solid supporting cast, really bring the world to life, even though the movie takes a little while to explain the story’s setting and rules.
Some of the negative feedback stemmed from the film’s slow pace and tendency to over-explain things, which frustrated viewers unfamiliar with the games. Despite this, the movie resonated with its audience. It delivered exciting action, remained faithful to the original games, and gave fans a version of Mortal Kombat that felt truer to the source material than earlier attempts.
Mortal Kombat II Raises The Bar
The movie Mortal Kombat did well in theaters, earning $84 million worldwide. Because of this success, a sequel is being made with the same director. Mortal Kombat II will likely focus more on the actual tournament itself, raising the stakes after the first movie mainly focused on building the story’s world and introducing its characters.
In Mortal Kombat II, Earthrealm’s heroes team up with Johnny Cage, a former action movie star, to compete in a deadly tournament created by the ruthless Shao Kahn. They must win to prevent Kahn from combining Earthrealm with his sinister realm of Outworld.
The movie stars Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, and Josh Lawson as Kano. Ludi Lin plays Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks is Jax, Tati Gabrielle is Jade, and Lewis Tan plays Cole Young, with Damon Herriman as Quan Chi. Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada return as Sub-Zero and Scorpion, respectively, alongside other cast members.
Mortal Kombat II is currently playing in cinemas worldwide.
