Ash Must Team up With an Ancient Lucario To Find Mew
A long time ago, the town of Rota and the magnificent Cameran Palace were in danger due to a devastating war. Sir Aaron, a renowned Aura Guardian, and his student, a Lucario, desperately tried to reach the legendary Tree of Beginning. They believed its power could end the conflict and bring peace to the warring factions.
Suddenly, Sir Aaron shocked everyone by declaring he wouldn’t return to the palace or Queen Rin. He then trapped Lucario inside the jewel of his scepter, where the Aura Guardian remained for countless ages, confused and deeply saddened by what seemed like a sudden, inexplicable betrayal.
Every year, Cameran Palace and Queen Ilene honor the legendary Sir Aaron with a festival. They choose someone as “Hero of the Year” and “Aura Guardian.” This year, Ash wins the title and receives a costume resembling Sir Aaron’s, even including the hero’s missing scepter. When Ash holds the scepter, it releases Lucario, who is stunned to learn centuries have passed since Sir Aaron vanished.
When Mew playfully takes Pikachu and Meowth to its home at the Tree of Beginning, Ash is determined to rescue his friend and sets off on a journey to this legendary place. During their time with Mew, Pikachu and Meowth discover more about the Pokémon and its special connection to the Tree of Beginning. Lucario joins Ash, though hesitantly and only because of a request from Queen Ilene, and hopes to piece together fragments of its lost memories along the way.
A Narrative That Is Wonderfully Different Compared To Previous Films
Less Focused on Battles, More on Lucario’s Reflections
Unlike most Pokémon movies, Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew isn’t really about battles – not in the present day, anyway. It mainly focuses on the characters’ journey and how they learn to work together, with battles only appearing briefly in flashbacks at the beginning.
Lucario feels unable to trust anyone after being betrayed by Sir Aaron, except for Queen Ilene, who is a descendant of Queen Rin. It’s particularly wary of Ash, believing he might one day abandon his Pikachu. But as they spend more time together and argue less, Lucario begins to realize that Ash truly cares for his Pokémon and friends, and that not all humans are untrustworthy.
Most of Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew is told from Lucario’s point of view, showing its connection to both the past and future. Lucario struggles to understand its former trainer, Sir Aaron’s, final message, and further develops its understanding of aura. Unlike previous Pokémon movies, this film focuses more on atmosphere and emotional storytelling than battles. Lucario’s journey is both beautiful and sad, offering a glimmer of hope while also revealing painful truths, all made possible by the unique time flowers and the legendary Tree of Beginning.
Beyond its touching story, this movie boasts beautiful animation. The colors are lively and expressive, but also soft and gentle when the story calls for it – especially in the dreamlike flashback sequences. The music is equally impressive, shifting between upbeat and hopeful to delicate and slightly sad. The Legacy of Lucario and Sir Aaron
The Sinnoh Region and Ash’s Future Teammate
Lucario and Sir Aaron lived in a time before Poké Balls were widely used, likely around the same period as the events in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, when Poké Balls were just becoming known. Like characters in that game such as Adaman and Irida, Lucario wasn’t kept inside a Poké Ball, and Sir Aaron wasn’t its Trainer in the traditional sense. Instead, they had a teacher-student relationship, with Sir Aaron guiding Lucario to improve its aura abilities. This kind of close bond actually formed the foundation for how Pokémon Trainers and their partners connect today.
Lucario is now a fan-favorite Pokémon, largely because of its striking design and powerful moves. After its introduction alongside Sir Aaron in the movie, many other characters, like Maylene and Cynthia, were shown with Lucario. Notably, a Trainer named Riley was also depicted studying aura, similar to Sir Aaron. In the Pokémon Journeys: The Series anime, Ash even had the opportunity to train a Lucario himself – a moment that was both exciting and a little sad for dedicated fans, and perhaps for Ash too.
