Even though Netflix is a leading streaming service, it still faces criticism. Recently, the company announced another price increase for its monthly subscriptions, which is likely to upset many users, according to DiscussingFilm.
Back in 2008, Netflix subscriptions were just $9 a month for unlimited streaming. By 2020, they introduced different plans: a Standard plan for $13.99 and a Premium plan for $17.99. As of March 2026, prices have changed again. The Standard plan with ads now costs $8.99 (a $1 increase), the Standard plan without ads is $19.99 (up $2), and the Premium plan costs $26.99 (also up $2).
It’s Another Cost Hit For Subscribers
Netflix is raising its prices again, this time in 2026. They also increased prices earlier in 2025. Before that increase, the ad-supported Standard plan was $6.99, the Standard plan was $15.49, and the Premium plan cost $22.99.
Netflix has been justifying its price increases by pointing to its extensive library of movies and shows, and explaining that higher prices enable continued investment in new content. The company recently reported it plans to spend around $20 billion on new shows and films by 2026.
Despite recent price hikes, many longtime subscribers feel the quality of Netflix content hasn’t improved. They point to a pattern of predictable, low-quality original shows alongside the sudden cancellation of well-received projects that don’t quickly generate profit. Popular examples of shows canceled despite their quality include Shadow and Bone, The OA, and GLOW.
Look, as a movie and TV fanatic, I feel it every time Netflix bumps up its prices. It really stings the wallet, you know? And it’s not just Netflix – we’re all paying for a bunch of different streaming services now. Every price hike makes you wonder if what you’re getting is really worth it, and honestly, it makes me think about where the whole industry is headed.
