In the Assassin’s Creed franchise, it is depicted that assassins work covertly, either in secret or disguised among the crowd, executing their targets fearlessly and swiftly escaping unnoticed. However, there are instances throughout Assassin’s Creed’s extensive timeline where the player finds themselves abruptly switching roles from pursuer to prey.
Beyond the recorded atrocities caused by humans, history is filled with mysteries and enigmas that remain unexplained. While Assassin’s Creed often takes players on a journey through famous landmarks, historical figures, and pivotal moments, it also occasionally delves into the deepest recesses of the past, where ancient terrors lurk, sending shivers down the spines of even the most hardened warriors.
7. The Necropolis – Assassin’s Creed Origins
Delving Into The Shrieking Place Of The Dead
Egypt in ancient times can give you the shivers even without a push, but when Assassin’s Creed: Origins leads players into a pitch-black, candlelit nook teeming with the deceased, it becomes overwhelmingly eerie. Fortunately, “Howls of the Dead,” the quest that escorts Bayek to the Necropolis, isn’t overly prolonged.
From deep within, there’s a chilling mix of eerie chanting, sorrowful wailing, and mad laughter. This unsettling noise is emanating from someone who fancies himself as a resurrected version of Set, the deity symbolizing chaos. Upon unmasking his deceit, Bayek steps forward to challenge this fraud, eventually bringing him under control. With the impostor dealt with, both Bayek and the player are now free to depart.
6. The Black Room – Assassin’s Creed Revelations
Subject 16’s Digital Purgatory
In the gaming world, diving deep into Assassin’s Creed Revelations, I found myself face-to-face with Subject 16, Clay Kaczmarek, in a digital realm known as the Black Room, within the Animus. The chilling revelations about his connection to the Brotherhood and the ominous message left in his Asbergo cell in messy red were unsettling mysteries finally unveiled here.
In the gaming world, I stumbled upon a place called The Room, or as some folks know it, Animus Island. It felt like an incomplete landmass filled with technical glitches and half-finished items – a digital realm that seemed to be a remnant from the early days of the Animus. Later structures had been built over it, but this forgotten corner was still there, waiting.
Before his untimely end, Clay somehow managed to embed his spirit within its depths, hidden and dormant until my arrival. It’s like he was waiting for me – Desmond – all along.
5. The Boston Underground – Assassin’s Creed 3
Through The Dark Labyrinth
Even though players must traverse the Boston Underground as part of the game’s narrative, its eerie atmosphere is likely to discourage them from revisiting. Delving into the tunnels with a lantern that casts shadows is essential for discovering a concealed fast travel option in Assassin’s Creed 3, but for those who dislike tight spaces, rodents, or dusty spider webs, they might prefer taking the longer route.
The floor markings called Eagle Vision at intersections can simplify navigation somewhat, but many people would rather avoid them. Interestingly, rats tend to move towards exits instead of fleeing from them. However, the Boston Subway system can be a test of claustrophobic endurance due to its numerous blind alleys and unresponsive hints.
This version maintains the original’s meaning while using more conversational language that is easy for readers to understand.
4. Lambeth Asylum – Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (Jack The Ripper DLC)
The Blood-Curdling Nest Of A Mad Killer
It could be argued that the entirety of the DLC “Jack the Ripper” in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, focusing on the mass-murderer Jack the Ripper, might be effectively utilized as a chilling setting. In this narrative, players shift from embodying Jack the Ripper himself to the Frye twins (particularly Evie), as they delve into the hidden past of this infamous figure and uncover the secrets behind his gruesome crimes.
While assuming the role of London’s infamous and psychotic serial killer, gamers gain understanding into the Ripper’s insanity, as a sinister voice whispers commands into his perception, urging him to stalk, murder, and conceal his misdeeds. The stakes escalate dramatically during the climax at Lambeth Asylum, where players must hunt down the killer in the basement of the insane asylum, as he has carefully planned an intricate trap for Evie.
3. Underwater Shipwrecks – Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag
The Claustraphobic Undersea Nightmare
In many games, water levels can cause a significant amount of stress for both novice and experienced players because of the possibility of encountering dangerous sea creatures or running out of air while trapped under layers of unstable rock or decaying wood at great depths. This is also true for the diving segments in the game ‘Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag’.
Though the prospect of finding hidden riches in submerged vessels might excite a daring pirate, the thought of plunging into such depths where sharks and dangerous eels lurk could make even the bravest sailor yelp like a scared puppy. It’s important to note that Black Flag isn’t primarily focused on swimming, which means dealing with issues like tricky camera controls underwater, limited breath, and Edward’s vulnerability while in the water make diving into shipwrecks, particularly the Blue Hole, a terrifying ordeal.
2. Catacombe Di Roma – Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood
A Primal Den Of Wolves And Fear
As a gamer, dashing through the ominous lairs of Romolous in Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood feels like an exhilarating race for a coveted prize at the finish line. The spine-tingling darkness, eerie atmosphere, and haunting music that characterize the Assassin’s Creed series serve as powerful incentives to complete the mission swiftly and move on to the next challenge.
In the second hideout, Rome Catacombs, Ezio initially collides with a skull-like skeleton. The intricate, labyrinthine corridors, the eerie music, and notably the final steep drop that necessitates quick grasping of ledges to avoid plummeting to one’s demise, make the Rome Catacombs an exhilarating and nerve-wracking experience within the game, if not the series as a whole.
1. Cradle Of The Underworld – Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
A Chilling Spelunk Of Ghostly Baby Cries
In the “Fate of Atlantis” DLC for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the Cradle of the Underworld is a challenging, murky, and ominous locale teeming with mysterious adversaries. What makes this eerie setting truly chilling is the haunting cries echoing from unseen infants rumored to inhabit the Cradle.
Navigating the Cradle can be quite challenging due to its vertical structure, and it also includes submerged areas and narrow spaces that must be carefully maneuvered through. It’s a terrifying experience for any assassin, whether they hail from ancient times or the present day, with mysterious guards lurking in the shadows, eerie sounds of unborn cries, and an overall unsettling atmosphere.
